Get ready for the Venomverse.
Marvel recently announced their plans for a new series highlighting Venomized versions of several popular characters, and will be pitting them against some pretty nasty foes as well. The upcoming comic series Venomverse is a successor to Spider-Verse from a few years ago, and will feature the original host of the Venom symbiote, Eddie Brock.
Issues of Venomverse are set to include Venomized versions of Deadpool, Black Panther, Mary Jane, and more. The comics will bring together other Venoms to battle antagonists called ‘Poisons.’ Editor Devin Lewis stated that, “The Poisons will present a unique challenge for these Venoms, who’re some of the strongest and most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe.” Writer Cullen Bunn stated that, in this series, “In order to find as many suitable symbiotes as possible, [the Poisons] are making their way across the multiverse in a quest for insatiable power.” The Poisons will be taking over other Marvel characters too: concept art was recently released showing a Poison Hulk. Bunn also said, “There are definitely some horrific moments in this series, not just the gross-out or the jump scare. I think there’s some real emotional horror aspects to this story. The threat they’re dealing with has some pretty strong horror chops.”
That’s not all they have in store, though. The first issue of their miniseries sounds pretty epic, too. Edge of Venomverse #1 will be written by Matthew Rosenberg with artwork by Roland Boschi. Rosenberg said the issue starts when “X-23 manages to escape from her creators with the help of Venom…It’s a fun chance to explore two of Marvel’s most dangerous characters and see how things could have been different for them if their lives intersected. And if you are a fan of X-23’s early adventures, you’ll be happy to see some familiar, but slightly different faces in his book.” The first book of the miniseries is out June 28th, concluding in time for Venomverse’s release, and future issues are set to include Ghost Rider, Old Man Logan, and Gwenpool. There will also be an upcoming tie-in anthology titled Venomverse: War Stories.
The two main characters in Venomverse are rumored to be Venomized versions of Deadpool and Ghost Rider. There will be five issues of Venomverse, penciled by Iban Coello with interlocking variant covers by Clayton Crain (which look amazing). Edge of Venomverse will feature six issues, but the number of anthologies that will be included in War Stories is unknown.
The first issue of Venomverse is set for a September 2017 release date.
