If you were looking for nostalgia from the new Power Rangers, the latest trailer makes one thing clear: these are not your childhood’s Rangers.
The plot of the movie is this: Red Ranger Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Black Ranger Zack (Ludi Lin), Blue Ranger Billy (RJ Cyler), Pink Ranger Kimberly (Naomi Scott), and Yellow Ranger Trini (Becky G), receive extraordinary powers and are trained by Zordon (Bryan Cranston).
Though the characters’ names remain the same and they face familiar situations, the similarities end there. This new group of teenagers feels modern, darker, and perhaps a little rough around the edges, but the trailer also shows them learning how to exist as a villain-fighting team to defeat Rita Repulsa and Goldar.
Check out the trailer and then let’s dive deeper into some of the details:
As mentioned above, the newest trailer shows a first look at Zordon, voiced by Bryan Cranston. And he’s not your 90s Zordon. He’s no longer a hovering face in a glass cylinder; now he takes up a whole wall and his structure reminds me a bit of those classic Pin Art toys, but with LED lights projected on him for effect. However, he’s still there to offer guidance to the Power Rangers and advise them of how to be a team.
Another big difference from the 90s Power Rangers to today’s is the effect of the power coins on our heroes. In the olden days, the resembled actual coins and drew their power from dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Now they just resemble rocks. It is also implied they are the actual source of power and provide strength, speed, and other abilities as shown in the trailer, not the suits.
Rita Repulsa is also back, this time played by Elizabeth Banks. She doesn’t resemble the Rita Repulsa we knew at all; she’s definitely more intimidating this time around. The biggest change is her costume, which has led some to speculate she may have been a Power Ranger herself in the past. And this Rita isn’t in a remote location controlling things. This Rita is among the action, even walking among traffic to inflict pain and chaos.
Alpha 5 (Bill Hader) has a new look, but other than that he seems to have the most similar traits to his counterpart of the past. He seems to still act as a helper to the Power Rangers and is still around to offer a witty quip and serve as comic relief.
With a name like Goldar, it only makes sense he’s made of gold. And he is this time around, no longer resembling a wolf/monkey hybrid in gold armor. Now he’s solid gold, can grow to hundreds of times his size, and has wings. The Power Rangers will need to step up their game to defeat him, in the form of Megazord.
Though the trailer only shows a brief glimpse – and not even a full shot! – of Megazord, it’s easy to tell the Power Rangers have some upgrades this time around. With this new and improved Megazord, it’s easy to tell the Power Rangers will easily combine their strength to save the day.
