End of the world rallying speeches aren't hard to come by in film and television. Good ones, however, are more difficult to find.

As Old as Time tells the story of Beauty and the Beast, but it’s a little…twisted.
I loved this book. So much so that I read all 500 pages in one sitting. Yes, seven straight hours of reading because I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!
The story starts off with a little history of how the Beast came to be. Not only did Belle’s parents meet in his kingdom, but Belle’s mother is the one that enchanted him! Turns out she was an enchantress, and a pretty powerful one at that, named Rosalind. Her motive for the curse was over a decade old: she wanted to protect the magical people like her, and the King and Queen were doing nothing but watching them suffer. She retreated to a provincial town with her husband, Maurice, and daughter, Belle, to live a more secluded life.
After many years, when the King and Queen try to get Rosalind to help them during a time of disease, she learns that evil is in their hearts and refuses to help. After they die, Rosalind goes back to the hidden kingdom to test the young prince. After the curse is cast, it is thought that she disappeared and the people that knew her forgot about her completely.
But in this twisted tale, it gets even more twisted.
What was so enchanting about this book were the changes made. I already loved Belle’s story, but I think I like it even more now. Belle is still strong, independent, and a little odd, but she yearns for adventure!
I don’t want to give away too much (because you should seriously read this book), but one of the major changes is what happens to the rose. You know the one I’m talking about: the one encased in glass that is the signal for the curse to be forever. But in this version, Belle ruins any chance of the Beast saving the lives of himself and his servants. She grabs the rose from under the glass and it disintegrates before her eyes.
What does she do?
Reads, of course. She uses the Beast’s huge library to find out more of the history of the former kingdom and in doing so, learns about her own history as well. I love this addition to the story. It makes Belle seem even more determined and kind-hearted. She knows she messed up their lives and is doing everything she can to change that, including finding her mother that she just learned was an enchantress to see if there is another way to lift the curse. Besides, everything can be fixed with books, right?
The final big twist is about who the bad guy is. It’s not Gaston, believe it or not. One of the old men that had magic and used to be friends with Belle’s parents took it upon himself to rid everyone of magic. He’s in charge of an insane asylum, but he does experiments on the charmantes (people with magic). To take him down, the Beast and Gaston work together! This was totally cool to see.
I won’t give away any more, but I feel like I need to say this. I learned a lot of French words by reading this book. Some I already knew, some I had to use context clues. There were also a lot of words I had never even heard of before, probably to get the reader to understand words that Belle herself would understand because she’s such a big reader. I mean, I had no idea what ululate meant (turns out its a howl or wail of expression of emotion, usually grief).
I give this book a 5/5. And there are even more Twisted Tales by Liz Braswell, including twists on Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty, and I can’t wait to read those as well.

Since 1947, Tony awards have been presented to celebrate excellence in theatre, and have been a joint venture of The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing since 1967. Any Broadway nerd will tell you the best thing about the Tonys is, well, everything! It’s the dancing, the singing, the costumes, the sets, you name it. It’s a great show jam-packed with entertainment. It’s also an opportunity for live theatre fans to get a taste of the best of the best in current Broadway shows all in one night. Last year’s awards celebration was historic, entertaining, and dominated by the unstoppable cast of Hamilton. This year, the competition is again stiff, and the show promises to delight audiences with epic show samplings and nonstop entertainment.
Hosting a Tony Awards viewing party is a great way to celebrate the occasion with friends. So, even if you can’t garner one of the coveted tickets to the live show, you can still celebrate at home with your own festivities and watch the live broadcast. Here are five tips to assist you in hosting a memorable viewing party for Broadway’s biggest night.
The star of the evening is the show itself; however, to get your guests in the mood for an evening of singing and dancing, kick off your celebration with music from this year and previously nominated shows. Host sing-a-longs or have some karaoke fun before and during commercial breaks of the broadcast. Also, make sure you transform your space with Broadway inspired décor including comedy and tragedy masks, posters, playbills, ticket stubs, and marquee and New York Street signs. Your guests will feel like they just stepped off of the streets of New York City and into a Broadway theatre.
No Tonys viewing party would be complete without a few costumes. It is also a great time to showcase your cosplaying skills. Ask your guests to put on their thinking caps and come dressed as their favorite current or classic Broadway character. You will undoubtedly be surprised at their creativity. There is also no better time to bring out the craft table than a theme party, and to give your guests an additional opportunity to create costumes on the spot to join in on the fun. Having some props such as masks, feather boas, hats, and glasses will also give your guests a chance to play dress up.
Get your guests involved in the festivities with some friendly competition. Give them the chance to make their educated guesses about who will take home the much sought-after awards. Pass out your ballots, ask your guests to make their winner predictions, and turn their ballots before the show starts. The guest with the highest number of correct predictions wins a prize. There is nothing more fun than a cleverly themed party, and that includes your dinner menu. Theme your food and drinks around some of your favorite Broadway shows or musicals, the Great White Way, or Broadway theatre in general. Your guests will be thrilled that you went the extra mile to create some fun and interesting cuisine. A really fun and easy addition to your menu are cupcakes honoring the award nominees with mini Playbills.
Immediately following the Tony Awards red carpet arrivals, it’s time for you and your guests to settle in for the show. The 71st Tony Awards celebration will be held on Sunday, June 11, and broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on CBS at 8pm EST. This year’s ceremony will be hosted for the first time by Kevin Spacey, and it is sure to be an evening filled with high-energy musical numbers, comedy, entertaining performances, and a group of viewers passionate about live theatre.
With these five tips, you are well on your way to hosting a memorable Tonys viewing party. Use them to transport your guests to Broadway and pay homage to the bright lights, the big city, and an unforgettable evening at the theatre.
