A full-color graphic novel edition of The Mystery Knight, one of the thrilling Dunk and Egg novellas from George R. R. Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and a prequel of sorts to A Game of Thrones “Every wedding needs a singer, and every tourney needs a mystery knight.” Westeros is eerily peaceful. King Aerys I sits on the Iron Throne. A ravaging plague has abated. Yet beneath the surface, tensions linger sixteen years after a failed rebellion. In these restless times, noble hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall—Dunk, to his friends—and his precocious boy squire, Egg, travel the Seven Kingdoms performing chivalrous deeds, though Egg’s bloodline must be concealed at all costs. After heading north for Winterfell, Dunk and Egg are lured off the kingsroad by a wedding feast—and an unusually lucrative tournament. The champion jouster will claim a rare trophy indeed: a dragon’s egg. Dunk, always better in a melee, would be satisfied with a hot meal, a cup of wine, and a purse full of coins. But a treasonous plot is more likely to hatch before another dragon ever stretches its wings. Someone’s on to Egg. And a mystery knight with designs on an even bigger prize soon throws the entire affair into chaos.

Exploring The Kingkiller Chronicle II: The Wise Man’s Fear

By: Angela Russo (@NerdGirlForever)

The second installment continues the chronicling of Kvothe’s legendary history. After admissions, our flame-haired hero attempts to persuade Elodin to train him. The quirky master-namer rebuffs his entreaties, citing his penchant for rash impatience, but later relents after witnessing acts of selfless attentiveness. Having regained entrance to the archives, Kvothe wastes no time voraciously scouring the stacks for information about the Chandrian and the Amyr. Unfortunately his troubles with Ambrose are far from over. As the term progresses, things between the rival students escalate from sabotage to breaking and entering to malfeasance, culminating in Kvothe’s arrest and subsequent trial for inadvertently breaking Ambrose’s arm last term. Although Kvothe is cleared of all charges, the masters counsel him to take a term off from the University to let the heat die down.

In a rare act of wisdom, Kvothe heeds the advice of his elders and travels to the court of Maer Alveron in Severen. There he quickly finds favor by foiling an attempt on the Maer’s life, and wooing a bride for his patron through his bardic talents. Meanwhile, Kvothe and Denna clash over the controversial history of Lanre, and the two part without reconciling. Kvothe leaves Severen and leads a band of mercenaries to take down a camp of bandits in the countryside and has his second encounter with a member of the Chandrian. After a bloody battle, the mercenary group claims victory.

However, Kvothe’s return to the Maer’s court is diverted several times as he is drawn into the Fae by Felurian and follows his companion Tempi to Ademre where he receives training in the Ketan and the way of the Lethani. After yet another skirmish on the road, Kvothe finally returns to Severen, but his rash provocation of Meluan Lackless earns prompt dismissal, and he returns to the University. In the present, Kvothe finds that he still cannot open the thrice-locked box.

University Antics

Elodin is easily one of the most beloved characters at the University. One of the funniest moments is arguably the scene where Kvothe is haranguing him for training while Elodin blithely burns another master’s clothing. His methods seem harebrained and unconventional, but in truth he is a font of priceless wisdom to our aspiring namer. As ridiculous as his antics seem, Elodin is clearly the wisest master on staff. When Kvothe returns from his travels Elodin instantly recognizes Kvothe’s cloak as a Shaed, demonstrates familiarity with the gestural Adem language, and drops knowledge that the reader can just feel in their bones is likely to come back around as carrying massive significance.

Adventures in Fae and Ademre

While The Name of the Wind spent a substantial amount of time on Kvothe’s studies at the University, the action-packed sequel takes a very different tack. The majority of the magical methodologies taught at the University have a practical application grounded in logic and structure, but the philosophies that Kvothe experiences while “chasing the wind” are all deeply emotional and instinctual — much more akin to the practice of Naming.

Glammourie: the art of making something seem like something else. This casting changes both the appearance of something but also impacts how the other senses will perceive how it feels and smells — a temporary casting.

Grammarie: the craft of making things “be” by enhancing the natural traits of something, like making a fire hotter and hungrier. Powerful practitioners can use it to craft things into an object that uses those traits for the benefit of the user to wield, like the Shaed cloak Felurian makes for Kvothe. This is a more permanent kind of casting.

Spinning Leaf

Meditative mental state where the user simply “goes with the flow,” letting his mind free to wander wherever it wants. A pure state of feeling, apart from ordered thought — the opposite of the Heart of Stone. This technique is crucial to enhancing Kvothe’s connection to the sleeping mind which is necessary to the mastery of naming.

Lethani
The Lethani is a philosophy practiced by the people of Ademre. To live by the Lethani, is to live and act with a deep understanding of what is right and wrong.

What is Kvothe’s Destiny?

The entirety of Kvothe’s nature is characterized by how he repeatedly defies the norm. His depiction as a walking contradiction progresses as he accomplishes things no other has done before and lived. Kvothe is the first to cavort with Felurian and survive, the first to speak with the Cthaeh and walk away, and the first known outsider to truly receive Adem training. As hotheaded as Kvothe is, one would hope that the lessons of mindfulness and self-control in Ademre would be instructive for him in his dealings moving forward. However, Shehyn’s concern over the name Maedre and her hopeful commentary that the sword Saicere, (later renamed Caesura the poet killer) will serve to balance him out clearly foreshadows whatever disaster occurs prior to him becoming the Kote we know in the frame. Time will tell what role these events play in the history of our young hero.

The knowledge Kvothe acquires in his travels builds on the mythology we have had teasingly fed into our ears by Rothfuss since the chronicle began. The Wise Man’s Fear draws the reader deeper into the intricacies of the narrative. There’s truly no tale, legend, magic, or philosophy that is irrelevant to the evolving story of Kvothe, how he came to be Kote, and the mystery of the thrice-locked box looming upstairs at the Waystone. The Wise Man’s Fear is a bridge story that tantalizes us with riddles and mysteries just waiting to be unraveled in the long-awaited Doors of Stone.

The Walking Dead Compendium is here! Since 2003, Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead has been redefining the survival horror genre with its unique and vivid account of life after the end of the world. Although the cast is diverse and often changing (including, of course, a great number of zombies), at the heart of every tale is Rick Grimes: former police officer, husband, father, and de facto leader of a ragtag band of survivors looking to make a future for themselves in a world that no longer has one. To call The Walking Dead a zombie tale is accurate to a point, but it touches on only one facet of a story that asks timeless questions about what it means to live. It also asks whether or not this is possible in a world full of the dead. This is a great opportunity to experience this gripping read for the first time or catch up on the tale with the first four years worth of material, collected in one volume for the first time. The first eight volumes of this fan-favorite series collected into one massive collection. This volume collects THE WALKING DEAD #1-48.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Novelist Daniel Abraham and illustrator Tommy Patterson are not merely turning George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy A Game of Thrones into a graphic novel: They are meticulously translating one art form into another, and capturing the intricate nuances of Martin’s novels just as HBO is doing with the blockbuster series. The Abraham/Patterson collaboration is more than just a faithful adaptation. It is a labor of love—and a thrilling masterwork in its own right. Now, in the second volume, the sweeping action moves from the icy north, where the bastard Jon Snow seeks to carve out a place for himself among bitter outcasts and hardened criminals sworn to service upon the Wall . . . to the decadent south and the capital city of King’s Landing, where Jon’s father, Lord Eddard Stark, serves as the Hand of King Robert Baratheon amid a nest of courtly vipers . . . to the barbarian lands across the Narrow Sea, where the young princess Daenerys Targaryen has found the unexpected in her forced marriage to the Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo: love—and with it, for the first time in her life, power. Meanwhile, the dwarf Tyrion Lannister, accused by Lady Catelyn Stark of the attempted murder of her now-crippled youngest son, must call upon all his cunning and wit to survive when he is captured and imprisoned in the lofty dungeons of the Eyrie, where Lady Stark’s sister—a woman obsessed with vengeance against all Lannisters—rules. But Catelyn’s impulsive arrest of the Imp will set in motion a series of violent events whose outcome is fated to shake the world at the worst possible moment. For now is not the time for private feuds and bloodthirsty ambitions. Winter is coming . . . and with it, terrors beyond imagining. From the Hardcover edition.

‘Twin Peaks’ Recap: Episode 13

By Eric Ashley (@flapjackashley)

We’re getting down to crunch time in Twin Peaks land, with only five hours left, and the clock is ticking. Live time period viewership of the season has dipped to around 200,000, which is very low, even for pay cable. It adds some thanks to DVR and streaming, but it still has to be a disappointment. Game of Thrones, for instance, averages over nine million viewers (live time period) on HBO.

But Twin Peaks just keeps chugging along, for better or worse. So let’s dig into this episode, which is called:

What Story is That, Charlie?

While watching her son play on the newly installed playground equipment bought by the gleeful Mitchum brothers, Janey-E (Naomi Watts) professes her love for Dougie (Kyle MacLachlan) in a particularly tender scene. I never really thought of this before, but when/if Agent Cooper does indeed comeback, where does that leave Dougie’s family and coworkers who love him?

Doppelganger Cooper walks into a trap set by Ray, the guy who double crossed him after breaking him out of prison a few weeks ago. Ray’s band of baddies include Rezo (Derek Mears, who horror fans will recognize from playing Jason in the Friday the 13th remake), who challenged Evil Coop to an arm wrestling match – with Ray’s livelihood on the line. Evil Coop has no problem in beating Rezo after creepily showing no effort at all, asking Rezo if his arm hurt when they bend that way – subtly referencing Laura Palmer’s famous Black Lodge quote “Sometimes my arms bend back.” Rezo is defeated and Evil Coop literally punches his face in. Ray is left alone with him, reveals that he has the Blue Ring that was once Laura’s, and tells Evil Coop that he knows who he is. They talk a bit about Major Briggs, and Ray says that it was Phillip Jeffries (David Bowie) who gave him the orders to kill Evil Coop. Giving the mystery coordinates to him, Ray is shot in the head in mid-sentence. The rest of the bad guys are watching on the security camera’s big screen, and one of them is, fittingly, Richard Horne.

Hutch (Tim Roth) and Chantel (Jennifer Jason Leigh) are driving through Utah. Chantel makes some remarks about Utah and Mormons, and how they don’t drink coffee or coke, and abstain from sex until marriage. Hutch then says, “Yeah, but once they get married, don’t they have like eight to ten wives?”

Time Warp

It’s amazing how things in Twin Peaks just don’t change in over two decades. Big Ed (Everett McGill) is sharing a table at the Double R with Norma (Peggy Lipton), still pining after her all these years later. Deputy Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook) comes in, looking for Shelly (Madchen Amick). Both lonely hearts are disappointed as Shelly isn’t there, and Norma’s new beau comes in. Broken hearts, indeed.

Sarah Palmer (Grace Zabriskie) is drinking and smoking and watching an old black and white boxing match. It’s a sad scene, but it’s more creepy than anything. I just kept looking at every inch of the screen, expecting to see something weird happen – a shadow, a noise, a glimpse of something sinister. It’s an amazing way to keep the audience on edge even in a sequence that nothing really happens. And nothing does – except the clip on the television just repeats over and over and Sarah doesn’t seem to notice. Of course, I probably wouldn’t notice either if I were as loaded as her.

On thing that has changed is Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn), who is still arguing with her husband Charlie about characters we don’t know. In Week Two of “WTF are you talking about Audrey?”, she is ranting like a lunatic, and says that she feels like she isn’t herself anymore. She doesn’t even know where the Roadhouse is. The scene is painful to watch, not only because of Audrey’s breakdown, but Charlie’s cold dialogue line, saying to her “Now, are you going to stop playing games or do I have to end your story, too?” What?

James (James Marshall) makes his first appearance in the show since way back in hour two when Shelly said that “James has always been cool”, which is explicitly false. He is the Roadhouse’s featured performer and does a reprise of “Just You”, the horrible song that he, Donna Hayward (Lara Flynn Boyle) and Maddy Ferguson (Sheryl Lee) recorded in the second episode of season two. It’s just as ridiculous here, and I think they are even using the same audio track with the hilariously high pitched singing vocals. His two brunette backup singers even look a little like Donna and Maddy. Some girl in the crowd is moved to tears, and she’s not the only one – although I was in tears for probably not the same reason.

But the credits don’t roll there. Instead, they start over a silent scene of Big Ed drinking out of a Double R to Go cup, wistfully thinking of Norma. The credits begin over his shoulder as he quietly and sadly stares out the window. It’s perhaps the saddest end credit scene of the season so far.

Review and Looking Ahead

These plot driven episodes have gotten the reputation of being boring, but I’m relatively happy with them. They get overshadowed by the balls-out weirdness of episode eight and talking trees and whatnot… but they serve a purpose. With just five hours left, they are necessary because everything has to come together, and with all roads leading to Twin Peaks, it seems like they are.

But yet, it just feels odd. You’d think 25 years later would mean people have changed and situations are different. I don’t know if it is for fan service, but it just feels strange to see Ed still pining after Norma, or Bobby being a schoolboy with a crush on Shelly, or James singing a song he sang two and a half decades ago. And I’ve mentioned how it’s weird that Shelly is still a waitress. A scene later in the episode has Nadine meeting Doctor Jacoby and acting like a fangirl – and it’s hard to believe that they had never ran into each other before in all of these years. It’s almost like the world of Twin Peaks was frozen in time for 25 years and just now awoken again like a hibernating bear. Big Ed’s Gas Farm doesn’t even take credit cards – come on Ed! It’s 2017!

But if it is fan service, so we can go “awww, they are just like I remembered!”, that is fine. But then why are they doing anything but please the fans with the turn that Audrey Horne has taken? She was one of the most anticipated character returns, and when she did come back last week, it was in a confusing, screaming rant about a bunch of people we don’t even know. And this week’s was even more painful to watch her crying on the brink of a major breakdown. This is not the Audrey Horne I know or wanted to see.

While I’m at it, there are a few glaring omissions from the show as well. There’s no mention at all of Donna Hayward, Laura’s best friend, who also turned out to be Benjamin Horne’s secret daughter. Whether or not original actresses Lara Flynn Boyle or Fire Walk With Me replacement Moira Kelly declined to return, they haven’t even mentioned her whereabouts. With James being back, this will seem like an even bigger gap. And the same goes for the cast of the mill – Catherine (Piper Laurie) and Pete – the latter could have died during the bank explosion in story, but the former was a major part of the show and tied closely with Benjamin Horne as well. If Ed and Norma can still be playing some weird romance game, Ben could at least say something in passing about Catherine, his once great love, or Donna.

There are so many ways the show could go, but they are wrapping up a few inconsequential story lines – many having to do with Dougie’s character. That’s all well and good, but really, I could have done without so many with him to begin with. I am actually happy to see the Mitchum Brothers so happy and thankful towards Dougie though… I almost expect that when Dougie’s life is inevitably on the line in a future episode that they come to the rescue.

Audrey’s storyline is so far detached from everything and anything going on in the show that it is hard to tell where it will lead to. We know, as fans, where we want it to – a reunion between Agent Cooper and her, with her even possibly playing a part in bringing him back – but as we all know, this show doesn’t always give us what we want. I will say that Kyle MacLachlan playing dual roles that are so polar opposite of each other has been amazing. He deserves an Emmy nomination at the very least, as does Naomi Watts. She’s been a joy to watch.

Twin Peaks moved to a new timeslot on Sunday, catching some fans by surprise, as it will air at 8pm EST throughout the rest of its run. It’s hard to say that things are feeling back to normal in the town and in the show, but this week wasn’t as much filler as last week, and – Audrey’s story notwithstanding – it seemed like it was moving along. It may not have been exciting or mind blowing (although Ray would disagree on that part), but it counts. I would not have dragged out the Dougie plot as long as the show has, but the upside is that it keeps some fantastic actors in that story around. There is so many ways the show could go, and we never really know what to expect. With five episodes left, the show could easily air another earth shattering episode like hour eight, or it could be five straightforward hours of plot and story wrapping up.

Either way, even though the show has angered me this year despite being brilliant in areas, I’m still all in. We as fans have come this far, we can’t give up yet. I just hope our patience will be properly rewarded.

The Mist Ep. 7 “Over the River and Through the Woods” Review

By Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

This week marked the seventh episode of the premiere season of Spike’s series, The Mist. In “Over the River and Through the Woods” there were no grandmothers… Or rivers or woods, for that matter. What did this week’s episode have? Check out our review to find out!

One of the fatal flaws of The Mist is the slew of new characters that are introduced (and usually killed off) each week. This week, a man in the psych ward of the hospital who apparently saw evil was just another face in the endless parade of minor characters who come and go with little impact on the overall story. At this point, the lead characters are only lead characters because they have survived multiple episodes – not because they actually have anything to offer or engage the viewers. I was also struck with the realization with this episode that the mall has many faces, few names, and a lot of stupidity.

Actually, the stupidity of the mall refugees is next on the agenda of issues with this week’s episode. The two mall groups are being set up, clumsily, to go head-to-head because of food. That’s right – you read it correctly… They aren’t going to clash because of leadership style differences or because of hidden secrets or adherence to rules set in the mini-societies; one group is just getting hungry. I cannot even begin to explain how flimsy this argument is and how quickly (and ridiculously) the situation is supposed to escalate. There’s been no mention of rations in any previous episodes. There’s been zero talk about what constitutes “rations” in the group. There’s been no background foundation laid for a coming conflict based on hunger, and additionally, the conflict is premature, since the complaining group apparently still has rations remaining! While The Mist is built on the idea that humans will become dangerous in different ways because of fear, there’s plenty of other things that would logically cause conflict in the mall and plenty of other things to fear.

Meanwhile, the conflict between Nathalie Raven (Frances Conroy) and the priest (Dan Butler) came to its conclusion this week. One subscribing to faith in God and the other to faith in nature, the two religious “leaders” allowed the mist itself to decide who was in power in a “trial by ordeal.” While it was certainly a dramatic finish to their religious debate, it felt like a premature end. Organically building up religious fervor in a little church pressure-cooker would have been the most true to the essence of the source material. If anything, it was one of the few things I have enjoyed about The Mist. However, with a senseless entrance of the four horsemen of the apocalypse (I think), the religious feud came to a certain close all too soon. Unless Nathalie has some crazy left up her sleeves, the church group just lost the elements that made it worth investing interest and time in.

In general, the escalation of events in the mall, hospital, or church would perhaps be more believable if the audience was given any sense of the amount of time passing. With no environmental cues provided to the viewers to tell them how long the townspeople have been in the mist, it becomes extremely difficult to judge whether events and reactions are understandable or just plain silly. (Honestly, many of them are already silly, but become even more illogical without an understanding of the timeline in which they occur.) “Over the River and Through the Woods” only served as a reminder that seven episodes into the series has not necessarily translated to seven days, weeks, or months in the mist.

A few other observations about this week’s episode are worth noting. First, Adrian (Russell Posner) continued his little romance with the high school jock (who probably has a name that I don’t remember). To what end, I’m still not entirely sure. He wasn’t the only one with some romance in his life, as Not-Bryan/Jonah (Okezie Morro) and Mia (Danica Curcic) have gotten closer, in a love story I give literally zero craps about. And the mysteriously amnesiac Jonah finally had some memories of his past life come back – but lo and behold, they added absolutely nothing to the story except some random vocabulary words that could have come from a third grade spelling test. Last week we had a crazy doctor, this week we were gifted with a crazy psych ward patient. (Can we just stick with one psycho for a while, please?)

Last week, I didn’t entirely hate The Mist. This week, unfortunately, was back to square one. “Over the River and Through the Woods” had lots of things going on, but somehow nothing really happened. The entire episode could be taken out of the season and the series would not be any worse for wear.

Don’t forget that if you want to keep watching The Mist you can tune in to Spike TV on Thursday nights at 10/9c.
