Diana Gabaldon’s brilliant storytelling has captivated millions of readers in her bestselling and award-winning Outlander saga. Now, in her first-ever graphic novel, Gabaldon gives readers a fresh look at the events of the original Outlander: Jamie Fraser’s side of the story, gorgeously rendered by artist Hoang Nguyen.   After too long an absence, Jamie Fraser is coming home to Scotland—but not without great trepidation. Though his beloved godfather, Murtagh, promised Jamie’s late parents he’d watch over their brash son, making good on that vow will be no easy task. There’s already a fat bounty on the young exile’s head, courtesy of Captain Black Jack Randall, the sadistic British officer who’s crossed paths—and swords—with Jamie in the past. And in the court of the mighty MacKenzie clan, Jamie is a pawn in the power struggle between his uncles: aging chieftain Colum, who demands his nephew’s loyalty—or his life—and Dougal, war chieftain of Clan MacKenzie, who’d sooner see Jamie put to the sword than anointed Colum’s heir. And then there is Claire Randall—mysterious, beautiful, and strong-willed, who appears in Jamie’s life to stir his  compassion . . . and arouse his desire.    But even as Jamie’s heart draws him to Claire, Murtagh is certain she’s been sent by the Old Ones, and Captain Randall accuses her of being a spy. Claire clearly has something to hide, though Jamie can’t believe she could pose him any danger. Still, he knows she is torn between two choices—a life with him, and whatever it is that draws her thoughts so often elsewhere.      Step into the captivating, passionate, and suspenseful world of The Exile , and experience the storytelling magic of Diana Gabaldon as never before.

Mass Effect: Andromeda: A Conversation with V/O Artist Katy Townsend

By Nerd HQ Gaming

All this week Nerd HQ Gaming has been playing the much anticipated Mass Effect: Andromeda, and we have to say, we’re quite in impressed. Even though everything is new in the game, (new ship, new characters, heck even a whole new galaxy!) it has that feel of returning home to visit an old friend that you haven’t seen in years. In that vein, Nerd HQ Gaming’s Josh Monroe and Paige Mount sat down and talked with a brand new friend: V/O Artist Katy Townsend, the voice of Suvi Anwar, Science Officer aboard the Tempest. (Note: to gain a full appreciation for this interview, all of Katy’s comments are to be read in a Cheeky Scottish accent.)

Katy

JM: What drew you to ME Andromeda and the ME franchise as a whole?
KT: Well it was funny because when I got offered the role and when I signed on to be in the game I had no idea that this was a franchise. It was kind of an amazing surprise. It was only after I got on the role that I started dabbling in previous games and found a greater understanding of just how incredible this universe was.

JM: Did you go back and play or research any of the other ME games?
KT: I went back in dabbled with 2 and 3, it was interesting. It was really cool and it felt good to be a part of the next instalment in the franchise.

JM: Was it intimidating at all knowing that it was a very well-known franchise coming into it?
KT: Of course! It was the same thing as Fallout 4, the stakes are just so high. Wherever there is an adoring fan base and that passion for the game itself there is incredible expectations. (She laughs) You sort of just roll with it. I was really happy with this role, I was really taken by this character in particular. I trusted as I was working on the game that this character would hopefully be well received by the audience. Hopefully that’s the case. Have you guys played?

JM: We have actually been playing it all week as our game of the week for NerdHQGaming.
PM: I just recently got on the ship and I met your character finally.
KT: Awesome! Are you playing as male or female?
PM: I’m Playing as a female
JM: And I’m playing as a male. I usually go back and play as male and female.
KT: Cool to try and get a sense of both
JM: Yeah and they each have their own different story lines. We are really enjoying it so far.
KT: How so?
JM: It reminds me of 2&3 a lot which were my favorite games of all time. This is personally my favorite franchise
KT: Ooooo Okay…
JM: No pressure (Laughs) But going back into the galaxy of Mass Effect feels new at the same time through the exploration of andromeda. It has that reminiscent feel of what I loved about the previous games, but with a whole new galaxy to explore it feels completely fresh. So it kind of hits both worlds there.
KT: Oh, cool yeah
PM: Yeah, we are starting with a whole new cast of characters in this game. It’s exciting to step into some new uncharted territory and see how these characters will expand and evolve across this game and future expansions if there is more to come
KT: Of course. And Shepherd was so beloved that it’s always going to be difficult to fill those shoes. I love that we are taking a risk with this and trusting that over time the fans of the game will fall in love with this new universe and these new characters.
JM: Right, and personally I’m loving Ryder so far
PM: Same, Ryder is awesome!
KT: Yeah! It’s really interesting, I love that Ryder is sort of fresh meat and inexperienced, that is a really exciting springboard because there are just so many ways you can go. The sky is the limit for Ryders character arc and it makes it really exciting to watch her character grow and expand in this universe.
PM: Definitely. Ryder has to prove him/herself a little bit.
KT: Yeah. It adds more of a challenge to the game I think

girl

JM: In our opening dialogue with your character you have a nerdy obsession with dirt
KT: Right (laughing)
JM: Is there anything that you would secretly love to research more of that may not be the most popular thing out there.
KT: You know it’s funny because in another life I would have loved to have done what Suvi is doing and study astrophysics or microbiology. I was never really that good at science but I would really love to research interesting scientific theories like holographic principle and string theory, something the involves those types of things. I’m kind of similar to Suvi in that I have this child like wonder for the world. I’m excitable like she is, it wasn’t very difficult for me to nail down some of the stuff that she does. But yeah maybe not dirt…. (laughing) . But I love that about her. I love that she is the ultimate nerd on the ship and the beacon for scientific knowledge and philosophical musings. I think that makes her a really interesting character to get to know.
JM: Absolutely
KT: I also love that she is kind of at the intersection between science and fate. I think that is a really interesting aspect to her character as well and certainly is a source of debate between her and Ryder.

JM: What parts of your own personality did you infuse into this character that really shined through in the performance?
KT: That’s a good question. She is an avid tea enthusiast which is something we have in common. She is deeply spiritual and I am as well, although I don’t follow a specific religion, but neither does Suvi. She has a strong believe in a higher intelligence that her science has led her to believe in. The older I get the more spiritual I become. She is quite like a sensitive wee soul, I kind of relate to that as well (Laughing). There are a couple of little adorable moments especially in the first introduction with Ryder where Ryder suggests that she go out in the field and she feels completely inexperienced. That is something I would definitely love to see in future installments of Andromeda, Suvi coming in to her own and gain experience and learn from Ryder and the rest of the squad mates in that sense. But yeah definitely with [Suvi] it was like slipping on a glove there was just so many things I connected with. Some of the things [Suvi] would talk about are things that would come out of my own mouth, so it wasn’t too much of a stretch.

PM: That’s a great role to play, something so easy to fall into
KT: Yeah it was really funny because there are some sentimental and emotional moments where she is talking about her affection for her family and how difficult it was for her to leave them to embark on this journey, and coming from small town in Scotland I left my entire family behind in Glasgow to come to the US and Los Angeles to start a life for myself. It was emotional and when I was reading through those pieces I felt I related a lot to that aspect of her character. That’s a credit to the writer as well, Sheryl [Chee], she is amazing. She has a background in philosophy, I found that really interesting, it makes perfect sense that she would be the voice behind Suvi for certain scientific musings.

PM: When you moved here from Scotland did you ever think that you’d be getting into voice acting?
KT: I didn’t really know to be honest. This has been a huge surprise and a bit of a whirlwind you know. I used to played a lot of games when I was a kid and less so in my teenage years. My first year when I was in LA I ended up at E3 convention and it had been a good 10 years since I had played any kind of game. I felt like that moment where Marty Mcfly steps into the future it was insane and electrifying. That was my beginning of this curiosity in perhaps exploring this niche of gaming. I call it a niche but it’s actually one of the biggest aspects of the entertainment industry. That was the start of it for me I thought the whole thing was exciting and wanted to explore it further. You never end up going the way you think you will, some things catch you off guard.

PM: I think that’s just life, you can’t plan it out.
KT: Right. With Fallout 4 I’ve really enjoyed connecting with the fans of the games. Really immersing myself into the community and getting to know them. That kind of passion is infectious, so I’m excited to meet and engage with the ME fans as well. It feels like an entirely new community and so far it’s been really lovely. It’s fun to have a mass group of people to nerd out with and explore an entire new universe with.

with

JM: Do you have a favorite character from Andromeda or the past ME games?
KT: I’ve just started the game and I have a feeling that PeeBee is going to be my favorite in Andromeda. During one of my last sessions I came out a little early and got to catch the tail end of one of Christine Lakin’s voice over sessions and it was so much fun so I’m really excited to explore PeeBee. My favorite character of all time is Courtenay Taylor’s character: Jack.
PM & JM: YEAH!!!!!
KT: She was a badass. I am a fan of her work in general, I got friendly with here because we both worked on Fallout 4 together and she is just incredible voice actress and I really admire her work. Jack’s probably my favorite, those tattoos and everything.
JM: The tattoos are amazing
PM: I want those
KT: I want those too! Probably Jack’s my favorite overall.

PM: Do you have any future projects that you are excited about?
KT: It’s crazy, I actually don’t think there is anything I can share right now. It’s so funny because when I started ME it was September 2015 so it was 2 months before Fallout 4 had even come out. There are these giant gaps in between everything so sometimes as an actor it can be tricky to push momentum forward with your career because you are sitting on these secrets. The projects I’m working on now are again completely different then ME and Fallout 4. Diversity is really important to me and it’s exciting to branch out into different worlds. I’m excited for everything I’m working on. It was amazing to work on ME, I hope they continue this Journey with this character Suvi if there is a sequel, I hope so.

‘Twin Peaks’, A Cultural Phenomenon

By Eric Ashley (@flapjackashley)

Every so often, something comes along and goes from being merely a TV show and into being an event. Back in the Spring of 1990, “Twin Peaks” became just that, a phenomenon that captured the nation and one that people still talk about some 27 years later. “Twin Peaks” made such an impression that it is making a comeback with a limited run third season on Showtime in May – a full twenty-six years after it went off the air. This will be the first part of a three-installment series where I look back on each of the two seasons of the show and concluding with the 1992 feature film spinoff and the franchise’s longevity and future. But let’s start at the beginning:

WRAPPED IN PLASTIC

Director David Lynch has always been a weird one. Already by this point, he was known for his visionary feature films like Dune, Blue Velvet and Eraserhead. His work can be seen as bizarre, brilliant, creepy, but always memorable. But when word started to spread that he wanted to bring that polarizing style to network broadcast television, it made heads turn. Keep in mind, this was back in 1990 when there were only three major television networks – a pre-NFL Fox Network was just starting to find it’s footing at this time and only available in 89% of the country – and cable channels like AMC and HBO weren’t an option for a big audience. Heck, this was back when AMC still aired American Movie Classics. Putting that vision into a weekly series was indeed buzzworthy.

Casting would bring about many veteran actors to the small screen, including Academy Award nominee Piper Laurie, Richard Beymer, Grace Zabriskie and Ray Wise. The breakout star, however, would be actor Kyle MacLachlan, whose signature role as Special Agent Dale Cooper – sent to Twin Peaks to investigate the murder – would be so popular and iconic that it would eventually become a hinderance on the franchise. But more on that later.

The series would be set in a fictional town in the scenic Pacific Northwest, and each episode would represent a single day in life of the residents of Twin Peaks. In reality, the pilot would be filmed in the greater Seattle, Washington, area, including locations in North Bend and Snoqualmie Falls. All it would take would be a body – wrapped in plastic – washing up on the shore of the town’s mill that would send this sleepy town spiraling out of control with secrets and intrigue.

WHO KILLED LAURA PALMER

The murder victim would be identified as Laura Palmer, the high school Prom Queen who was the epitome of Small Town Innocence – she was well liked, lived clean, and even volunteered at Meals on Wheels. Everyone was a suspect as the mystery began to unfold in almost a dream-like state. People walked around to a light jazz music soundtrack, danced with photos while screaming in grief, always slept with one eye open and drank copious amounts of damn fine coffee and ate lots of cherry pie. But as the show went on, things would not be what they seem – starting with the owls.

The murder mystery would not be solved in its two-hour pilot episode – although if you look closely in the mirror on the wall towards the very end, a production error of a crew member’s reflection will give you a big clue for future twists – and the show would settle into its weekly series rhythm. Every week, the show would get more and more bizarre, with casket riding, dwarf dancing, backwards talking, a woman walking around talking to a log, and blatant audience trolling – the actress who played murder victim Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) would show up in the series as Laura’s identical cousin. Every week would be directed by someone with chops in feature film making – creator David Lynch only directed the pilot and third episode – and made this a series like nothing else where each show felt like its own mini-movie. It truly was like nothing else at the time. By the time the abbreviated first season ended, faithful viewers were expecting some answers, but what the writers did instead caused more damage than good to the overall brand. Again, more on that in my next essay that documents season two.

THE PHENOM

The pilot episode debuted in April of 1990 with a genius marketing campaign. ABC, knowing that David Lynch’s reputation preceded him and that not much was known about “Twin Peaks” prior to debut, most ads focused on the buzz, claiming that if “you miss it tonight, you won’t know what everyone is talking about tomorrow”. The two-hour debut pulled in over 25 million viewers, winning its time slot easily and was an instant smash hit. The series settled into its regular time at 9PM on Thursdays – at the height to NBC’s “Must See TV” era and directly against “Cheers”, TV’s No. 1 show at the time. “Twin Peaks”, however, thrived in the slot, benefitting from what became known as the “Water Cooler Effect”, whereas people would gather around the office the next day to talk about what happened on Thursday night. People would hold viewing parties every week, cosplaying and dressed in plastic, eating pie and drinking coffee, and taking notes on clues the show would drop.

And the popularity would stretch beyond the TV screen. The soundtrack from the series was commercially released and quickly landed in the Billboard top-10. A book based on the fictional “lost diary” of Laura Palmer became a New York Times bestseller. Even an audiobook called “Diane, the Twin Peaks Tapes of Dale Cooper”, a recording of Kyle MacLachlan reading text in the iconic style that his character would often be seen doing, generated lots of revenue. “Twin Peaks” swept the nation by storm, and the question “Who Killed Laura Palmer?” became part of the industry’s most remembered catchphrases in history.

“I KNOW WHO KILLED LAURA PALMER”

This was a quote that ended episode three, trailing perhaps the series’ most infamous scene – the Dream Sequence of the aforementioned dwarf dancing and backwards talking. Agent Cooper called the Sheriff and claimed he knew the answer that was plaguing the country, and pretty early in the show’s run. Problem is, he actually didn’t – and neither would the audience for months. And thus began the undoing of “Twin Peaks”.

In my next article, I will go over season two – what was good, what was bad, and what was so awful that it killed the show deader than Laura Palmer ever was.

How Star Trek Approaches Healthcare Services

By Biz Hyzy

When grand debates overtake the news, I always turn to my favorite source of open-minded, forward thinking discourse to give me perspective: Star Trek! This week, we’ll recap a few episodes that explore how Starfleet approaches health services.

In Gene Roddenberry’s utopian future, humans live peacefully on Earth and work with the United Federation of Planets to learn about alien cultures and spread goodwill. Starfleet provides free care to everyone—humans, aliens, patients, strangers—because they believe in the sanctity of life. However, they often revise their moral codes when confronting communities whose systems operate differently than theirs. To analyze situations where Starfleet must weigh an individual’s health against group prosperity, revisit these six episodes. I almost exclusively highlighted episodes from Voyager and Deep Space Nine. If you can think of any relevant examples from TOS, TNG, or ENT, please leave a comment below!

I, Borg (TNG Season 5, Episode 23)

I borg

When the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise discovers a malfunctioning Borg drone, Dr. Beverly Crusher insists on treating him. As the Borg stabilizes, Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge and Lt. Commander Data realize they have the means to disable the entire Borg Collective. If they implant an unsolvable formula into the drone and then reconnect him to the hive mind, the formula will spread like a virus, destroying them. However, this already questionable plan becomes more complicated when cinnamon roll Geordi La Forge befriends the Borg, naming him Hugh.

The debate: Guinan and Captain Jean-Luc Picard, both victims of Borg ruthlessness, want to use Hugh to dismantle the Borg. Meanwhile, Crusher and La Forge question using Hugh as an instrument in genocide.

The resolution: After speaking with Hugh, Guinan and Picard realize he is now an individual, especially when he uses the word I instead of we and because he refuses to assimilate his new friends. Although Hugh wants to stay with the Enterprise, he knows that would place them in danger. Virus-free, he returns to the Borg, hoping his individuality will subvert the hive mind.

Phage (VOY Season 1, Episode 5)

phage

A terrible disease called the Phage has plagued the Vidiians for centuries. To survive, they steal organs from other beings to replace their own degrading parts—their most recent acquisition: Neelix’s lungs. Knowing little about the Talaxian species, the Doctor cannot perform a transplant or replicate lungs for Neelix. However, after placing Neelix in a coma, he crafts holographic lungs. Although they technically keep Neelix alive, they cannot accommodate movement, rendering him paralyzed.

The debate: Captain Kathryn Janeway demands the Vidiians return her crewmember’s lungs. The Vidiians refuse because they need the lungs to survive. Since this is season one and Voyager is still learning how to survive in the Delta quadrant, they lack the means to incarcerate the aliens. Morally, Janeway doesn’t want to resort to killing.

The resolution: Janeway releases the Vidiians in the hope that the Doctor will, one day, make progress with Neelix and revive him. She clarifies that if the Vidiians attack again, she will retaliate with force. Grateful for her mercy, the Vidiians share their medical knowledge with the Doctor. With this information, Kes donates a lung, which the Doctor alters to fit Talaxian physiology.

Critical Care (VOY Season 7, Episode 5)

Critical Care

The Dinaali use a complex formula called TC (Treatment Coefficient) to determine how to allocate their medical supplies. High TC means that person has a higher education and is expected to serve a great purpose in society, allowing him/her to receive one-on-one attention from his/her doctor as well as preventative medicines. Meanwhile, patients with low TC are denied that same medicine—even if that means saving them from death.

The debate: The hospital administrator, Chellick, believes the Dinaali should use their medical resources on the people that will contribute the most to their society. The Doctor believes patients with the direst conditions deserve immediate care.

The solution: The Doctor steals Cytoglobin from the privileged patients on Level Blue (high TC) to save the dying patients on Level Red (low TC). He also teaches another doctor how to work the system so that he’ll receive larger shipments of medicine in the future. Lastly, the Doctor infects Chellick with the chromovirus (harsh!). The allocator recognizes Chellick as a patient with low TC, forcing him to reprioritize his morals.

Hippocratic Oath (DS9 Season 4, Episode 3)

oath

BFFs Dr. Julian Bashir and Chief Miles O’Brien land on Bopak III to study a subspace magneton pulse only to discover the planet is run by rogue Jem’Hadar. Goran’Agar, the Jem’Hadar First, captures the Starfleet officers. He enlists Bashir’s help to cure his unit’s addiction to ketracel-white, a drug that the Vorta use to ensure Jem’Hadar loyalty. When Goran’Agar crashed on Bopak III years before, he did not die from withdrawal, so he believes the planet has something to do with the cure.

The debate: Bashir wants to help the Jem’Hadar, believing that if they are no longer addicted to ketracel-white, they can be as independent and merciful as their leader. O’Brien, however, plots an escape, convinced the Jem’Hadar will always be killers, addiction or not. (For a similar debate about one species keeping another addicted for personal gain, watch TNG’s “Symbiosis.”)

The resolution: Bashir discovers that Goran’Agar was never addicted to ketracel-white due to a genetic mutation and therefore cannot cure his comrades. Since the Jem’Hadar do not have any more ketracel-white, they will experience painful, aggressive withdrawal symptoms, ultimately resulting in their deaths. After leading Bashir and O’Brien to their runabout, Goran’Agar stays behind to kill his men, hoping to bestow a less painful exit from this world.

The Quickening (DS9 Season 4, Episode 24)

quick

Two centuries ago, the people living on planet Teplan attempted to resist the Dominion. To punish them, the Dominion infected them with the Teplan Blight, a virus characterized by dark veins that turn red when the disease reaches its terminal stage. To spare a dying person from his/her pain, Trevean, a native, euthanizes him/her with herbs. Bashir attempts to cure the Teplans of their disease, but he soon discovers that the electromagnetic fields from his medical equipment make the virus mutate and quicken faster.

The debate: Trevean believes there is no cure to the blight and wants Bashir to stop giving his people false hope. Meanwhile, Bashir and a pregnant woman, Ekoria, obsess over finding a cure.

The solution: Bashir induces Ekoria, now quickened, so that she can give birth before she dies. The baby is born without lesions or dark veins; although Bashir did not invent a cure, the medicine he gave Ekoria vaccinated her baby, who is now immune to the blight. Although his work will save the next generation of Teplans, he continues to study the disease on DS9 in the hopes of liberating the adults too.

Extreme Measures (DS9 Season 7, Episode 23)

sick

When Constable Odo escorts Captain Benjamin Sisko to Earth in “Homefront” and “Paradise Lost,” unbeknownst to them, a covert organization called Section 31 infects Odo with a morphogenic virus. Assuming Odo would once again join the Great Link (which he does), Section 31 expects him to spread his disease to the Founders, killing Starfleet’s greatest enemy and ending the Dominion War.

When Bashir recognizes this conspiracy in, “Extreme Measures,” he tells Starfleet he’s discovered a cure for Odo—a lie that tricks them into sending a Section 31 operative, Luther Sloan, to DS9 to destroy the formula. When Sloan realizes Bashir plans on extracting the cure from his mind through illegal Romulan mind probes, he kills himself. Barely stabilizing the operative, Bashir and O’Brien use a multitronic engrammatic interpreter to explore Sloan’s mind, hunting for the cure.

The debate: Like Picard in the beginning of, “I, Borg,” Section 31 believes that killing an entire species—including their ally, Odo—is worth all the lives they’ll save in war. Bashir and the others want to save their friend and are ethically opposed to genocide.

The solution: Bashir and O’Brien discover the cure in Sloan’s mind and use it to save Odo. In “What You Leave Behind,” Odo links with the Female Changeling, curing her. Because of this generous act, she tells the Jem’Hadar and Breen to surrender, thus ending the war. Odo then returns to the Great Link, which transforms from a sickly green to a healthy gold.

In The Wrath of Khan, Spock famously says, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few,” yet Star Trek’s health-centric episodes tend to value individuality. Only when the Starfleet officers recognize their patients as fully-realized persons—not just an alien or an enemy or a resource—do they insist on saving them. As the plots unfold, we—in true Star Trek fashion—understand and sympathize with both sides of these debates: Sometimes, we justify hurting a person to bolster a group. Other times, we’re willing to risk a group to help a person. Too complex for easy answers, these situations always require compromise. In the end, we root for the characters that make altruistic choices. Everyone deserves a chance to live fully, but they can only do so if they’re healthy first.
