With the release of the global phenomenon “Pokémon Go” as well as the avalanche of merchandise celebrating the franchise’s 20th anniversary, 2016 has been a red-letter year for fans of the pocket monsters. But mama mia, it’s not over yet!
The Pokémon Company has unveiled a limited-edition “Mario Pikachu” line that, as you may have guessed, mashes together the fan-favorite Pokémon with “Super Mario Bros.” It’s like those “Super Pika Bros.” shirts, only better … and official.
There are adorable Pikachu plush dolls dressed as Mario and Luigi (complete with signature mustaches), trading cards, key chains, playing cards, game cases, T-shirts and notebooks. Basically, it’s everything you could hope for in a crossover of the two beloved franchises. Short of an actual video game, that is. Hopefully that will be remedied soon.
The merchandise goes on sale Oct. 29, but there’s a catch — and it’s kind of a big one: The collectibles are available exclusively at Pokémon Centers in Japan, at least for now. But keep a sharp eye on eBay.
In addition to the “Pokémon” milestone, this year also marks the 35th anniversary of Mario, who made his first appearance in 1981 in Nintendo’s “Donkey Kong.” Luigi didn’t make his debut until two years later, in 1983’s “Mario Bros.”
