Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Will Be Marvel’s Strongest Character ‘By Far’

Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Will Be Marvel’s Strongest Character ‘By Far’

If there’s anyone more excited than Captain Marvel fans for the superheroine’s big-screen debut, it’s actress Brie Larson. But if there’s anyone more enthusiastic about the possibilities for Marvel’s first female-led movie, it’s studio President Kevin Feige.

“With ‘Captain Marvel,'” he told Vulture, “there’s so much potential in the comics and there have been so many incarnations of her powers and the characters who’ve had that mantle that we’ve been focusing in on exactly how do we tell her origin. How does it fit into the cosmic side of our universe? How does it fit into what we’re doing with the next ‘Avengers’ movies?”

He explained that those questions have delayed a decision about a director for the planned 2019 release, as the studio searches for a filmmaker whose view of the material best matches its own. It was reported in August that Marvel had narrowed its list of candidates to three — Niki Caro (“Whale Rider”), Lesli Linka Glatter (“Homeland”) and Lorene Scafaria (“The Meddler”) — but the director’s chair remains open. However, the position will be filled by the end of the year.

The studio officially announced Larson as Captain Marvel in July at Comic-Con International, a casting decision that Feige emphasized was critical to the development of the character.

“It’s very important to us that all of our heroes do not become silhouette-perfect cutout icons,” he said. “All of the Marvel characters have flaws to them, all of them have a deep humanity to them. With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had. It’s important, then, to counterbalance that with someone who feels real. She needs to have a humanity to tap into, and Brie can do that.”

Larson will debut as Captain Marvel in “Avengers: Infinity War,” arriving May 4, 2018, before headlining a solo film, set for release March 8, 2019.
