Get prepared for some sleepless nights and some awesome classics finally being brought to high-definition and colored screens.
Universal Pictures just announced their Dark Universe, which will bring back to life their classic monster characters. If you enjoyed the old versions, you’ll want to check the plans for their revamped movies.
Alex Kurtzman, who directed upcoming film The Mummy, will oversee the Dark Universe along with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, producer Chris Morgan, and writer David Koepp.
The Mummy is the first of this series and is being released June 9th. Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella have the leads in this one. The next film the studio is planning – The Bride of Frankenstein – is written by David Koepp and is slated for release on February 14, 2019. Bill Condon (Beauty and the Beast) will helm this film. As with all movie universes, these horror flicks will be connected. This universe, as a whole, will be tied together by Dr. Henry Jekyll’s (Russell Crowe) program, Prodigium. The program tracks, studies, and even destroys evil monsters. It works outside of the government and protects the unknowing public from the evil creatures.
Danny Elfman (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Hulk, Spider-Man 3) will create the musical theme for this universe of movies, and the studio has already released a teaser clip on YouTube that includes the hauntingly splendid theme.
So far, the actors involved in the universe include Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s monster, Sofia Boutella reprising her new role as Ahmanet, Tom Cruise as Nick Morton, Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man, and Russell Crowe as Jekyll/Hyde. The actress taking the role of Frankenstein’s wife has yet to be announced.
“We take enormous pride in the creativity and passion that has inspired the reimagining of Universal’s iconic monsters and promise audiences we will expand this series strategically,” Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures, explained.
In a prepared statement, Kurtzman and Morgan said about the franchise, “When Universal approached us with the idea of reimagining these classic characters, we recognized the responsibility of respecting their legacy while bringing them into new and modern adventures. The studio and our fellow creative collaborators have championed and challenged us as we’ve begun to spin the web of ‘Dark Universe.’ It’s our hope these movies will engross longtime fans and spark the imaginations of brand new ones.”
