The Walking Dead Recap: Our New Best Friends Live in a Trash Heap

By Emily Offshack (@CanadianEmily)

SPOILERS AHEAD! You have been warned.

In a very short amount of time, Rick Grimes has gone from having all hope sucked out of him to giggling with joy when confronted by a mopey, hostile group of junkyard-living survivors. He can’t wipe the smile off his face. It’s good because hope is needed to survive, but it’s also a little weird. He has decided to assume that if a group is not the Saviors, they are allies until proven otherwise. It might be risky, but any plan to defeat Negan is innately risky. The mopey faces are more reassuring than Negan’s big, handsome smile.

Before we get too far into the encounter with this new group, let’s talk about what really mattered this episode: the Daryl and Carol reunion we’ve been waiting for. It all started with Richard…

Control the weather

If Carol gets hit by lightning, Daryl will kill you, Richard. Poor Richard is so desperate to fight the Saviors that he concocts a plan to use Carol as bait: lead the Saviors to Carol, they will treat her with the same dignity they do everyone else, and Ezekiel will finally agree to join the war because they have hurt someone he cares about. Great plan if you’re willing to sacrifice Carol for the greater good. Bad plan if you think Daryl is going to be your partner in crime. It doesn’t matter if you can make Molotov cocktails in your weird secret trailer, Richard. Daryl will beat you until you realize that Carol is off limits.

Richard’s plan likely would have worked. Ezekiel is still watching out for Carol; he brought Jerry and some others out to her cabin to clear walkers and deliver cobbler. (When jolly Jerry gives you cobbler, you take it.) Regardless of Carol, Ezekiel might be realizing the current deal with the Saviors has a limited lifespan. The tension between the Saviors and the Kingdom continue to escalate during supply deliveries. Richard has been told more than once that he will be the first to go if the Saviors decide to eliminate someone. It’s no wonder that he’s spending his free time developing plans to help defeat them, but he needs one that doesn’t require sacrificing someone who doesn’t want to be involved.

Don’t go breaking my heart

The look on Carol’s face when she sees Daryl at her door, when she’s explaining to him that she feels she has almost completely lost herself, when she’s begging him to tell her if the Saviors hurt any of their people—it’s completely heartbreaking. There are so many tears. In that moment, Daryl has to decide whether to tell her the truth and recruit her to fight or lie and allow her to continue her self rediscovery. He chooses to lie and doesn’t tell her about the disturbing demise of Glenn and Abraham. It’s the sweetest lie one could give to another in the apocalypse. Daryl doesn’t want to force Carol into more gruesomeness when her self identity is so fragile. So they have some soup by candlelight. A rare nice evening.

Will Carol learn the truth before the war begins? Will she be mad at Daryl for lying? Will Richard really give up his plan to use her as bait? The only thing we can assume is that Carol isn’t going to live alone in the cabin for the rest of the series. On the one hand, a fight isn’t truly a fight without an amazing, unexpected move from Carol. On the other hand, it would be unfortunate if one last fight left her cowering in a corner for the rest of her life. Odds are, the events that are really bothering her psyche are the ones involving children: losing Sophia, killing Lizzie, losing Sam. Maybe Carol will ultimately decide that being able to save people she loves is worth losing bits of herself. Where are all the postapocalyptic therapists?

We’re sad because we live in a trash heap

It’s not a bad plan when you think about it. When the zombie apocalypse hits, you have a choice of places to live: a fancy abandoned house, a tent in the woods, a secure prison, or a less desirable landfill. Who would think to go to the latter? The Scavengers have tailored at least part of their living facilities to better accommodate their purposes. Still, if I lived there, I would have a permanently sad expression, too.

Rick is a smile in a sea of sadness. When questioned about his gleefulness by Gabriel, he says he has learned (from Gabriel) that enemies can become allies. He says this after the Scavengers’ leader, Jadis, throws him into a junkyard pit with Winslow, the metal-spike-covered walker. After Rick’s “success” defeating the walker—after a hole in his hand, one in his leg, and advice from Michonne to pull the wall down—Jadis decides they are worthy of negotiating a deal. For a minute, Rick and Jadis are new government leaders working out a trade deal. They come to an agreement: in exchange for mass quantities of guns, the Scavengers will fight with them against the Saviors if they also get a third of that loot and keep most of what they stole from Alexandria. Rick is satisfied with this.

There are many strange things about the Scavengers. Their direct, simplistic language (“Your words now.” “Show Rick up up up.”). Their choice of living space. Their choice of clothes. Their zombie pit. Their circle formation. The really bad green screen that fills in the rest of the landfill at the top of the mountain. It will be interesting to see how their interactions with other groups will proceed.

Some fans think that there was a plane on that bad green screen. I noticed something flying but didn’t assume it was mechanical. Looking at it closer, though, it does appear to be too far away to be a bird. Interesting development. But wouldn’t they hear a plane in the silence of the apocalypse? Maybe just a mistake or a really big bird, like Big Bird.

The heat gets to you

Gabriel has become smarter and braver, due in part to the fact that he lost his clerical collar and now wears a tank top. It gave him freedom to hold his captor at knifepoint until the brief skirmish between the Scavengers and Alexandrians subsided.

Through a lengthy exchange with Rick, we find out the sequence of events that led to Rick locating Gabriel. Rick and Aaron navigate Lake Walker to gather supplies that are given to the Saviors. The Scavengers had been waiting for someone to recover those supplies for them, and they follow them back to Alexandria to figure out how to retrieve them. The supplies are given away before the Scavengers make their move. Gabriel gets caught by the intruder with big boots, who forces him to pack up everything in storage and take it to the junkyard to replace the missing supplies from Lake Walker. Gabriel leaves a note saying “BOAT” for Rick to find him. It ended up not being the end destination, but close enough. Now, Rick and Gabriel might as well be besties. Gabriel thanks Rick for rescuing him, and respect flows both ways.

Respect doesn’t flow between Rosita and Tara. They have a spat that seems insignificant. Rosita wants to start the search for the guns they promised to deliver. Tara tells her to go along with the group and deliver much needed food to Alexandria. Rick mentions that Tara has been out searching further than anyone, so she can at least tell them where not to go to look for guns. Of course, we know that Tara knows of a group who has a very large arsenal of guns. Will Rosita go out on her own and run into them? It’s safe to say we’ll see that group again, and it looks like that might be sooner than later.

Also, Rick gives Michonne a wire trash cat statue. How sweet.

Eye of the tiger

Daryl and Shiva are instant friends. Daryl knows how lonely it gets sleeping in a cage, so he befriends the tiger. Shiva, in exchange, acts like a kitten. Now I can’t help but picture Daryl riding into battle on a tiger, crossbow slung across his back. One swipe across Negan’s face and Shiva throws him down while Daryl finishes him off. Who needs other weapons?

There was a focus on weapons in this episode. Richard reveals his ability to make Molotov cocktails. Daryl obtains a crossbow again. Richard starts using a longbow after the Saviors declare that he can no longer show up to supply drops with a gun. Morgan loses his staff to the Saviors, even after politely asking for it back. The Scavengers demand guns and Rick promises to deliver them. Are weapons really the key to defeating Negan? Or is it numbers? Or is it something more tricky, subtle and personal that will take down only Negan, as Morgan would prefer, instead of the entire Savior community? We’ll see what works as the battle unfolds.

What I want to see next week: Negan. Who knew I’d miss the bad guys?

The Flash: Attack on Gorilla City

By: Ashley Binion (@ashleybinion)

“Attack on Gorilla City” was a fantastic return to form for The Flash. The series has underperformed in its junior season and the return of Grodd was a welcome piece of viewing.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Two years ago, when The Flash introduced Grodd, there was always a lingering flicker of hope that the series would eventually have a Gorilla City in one form or another. I’m proud The Flash decided to go for it and deliver a two-part episode event.

More than anything, the episode was more focused on the plot of the episode instead of character development. That’s okay with me. Largely, I enjoy character moments and development more than plot. However, sometimes just good old campy fun is in order and that’s what “Attack on Gorilla City” was. It did not deal with Savitar – thank goodness – or Iris’ impending death. Instead, it took characters, put them in a surreal situation, and let the actors have some fun.

Tom Cavanagh continues to amaze me with his stellar acting abilities. How many characters has he played on the series now? Five? It’s incredible what this man can do. Is he the male equivalent of Tatiana Maslany? Possibly. Having Earth-2 Wells as Grodd was a fantastic storytelling device that saved The Flash time and money. And Cavanaugh’s delivery was outstanding. Surprisingly, it didn’t bother me. It was a believable device. Grodd is a telepathic, mind-controlling gorilla so using Harrison Wells to communicate for him was very clever. Also, his interaction with Hipster Wells was hilarious. More of that, please.

Grodd has never looked that fantastic on The Flash because of the weekly restrictions of a television show, so I wasn’t expecting a whole lot when it came to the effects. However, grading on a curve, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it looked. The slow-motion fight scenes between Barry and Solovar were very well done. I give them props for attempting to do a fight on that scale. However, the surrounding gorillas in the coliseum were not on the same scale and quality level as the fight.

Meanwhile, back on Earth-1, it was nice to see Jesse return. It has been a while since she has appeared on the series and it was more than welcome. She was a solid addition to the canvas last season. Her scenes with Team Flash, Wally, and Earth-2 Wells always shine. Almost all of her scenes in the episode were with Wally. For two supporting characters, I really enjoy their relationship. Sometimes Wally can be arrogant, but Jesse brings out the best in him. They are a solid pairing that I can get behind, unlike the inevitable pairing of Julian and Caitlin.

Rating 4.5 out of 5 stars

Nerd HQ Gaming First Look: Night in the Woods

By Paige Mount and Loud Josh

Night In The Woods is a game with two sides. One requires you to be a detective searching for clues about a missing friend, possible killer and the mystery behind the main character Mae. While the other is filled with the everyday questions of whether or not to eat your friend’s pizza crust, how long is too long to play a computer game and how to explain dropping out of college to every bird, bear and crocodile in town. The game itself is visually stunning and NerdHQ Gaming is excited to delve deeper into the world Infinite Fall has created. Presenting this week’s Game of the Week here is your first look at Night In The Woods:

1) What specific elements of the game really stood out to you?

P: The visual look of the game is stunning. It’s actually what drew me to the game in the first place and I was not disappointed. The game is absolutely beautiful.

LJ: The character interactions are hilarious. Never in my life have I imagined myself identifying as a female, feline flunky, and I love it! Meeeeow!

2) How engaging was the game’s story?

P: The gameplay really relies on how you want to play the story, which makes each game a unique experience to the specific player. I really enjoy that you can choose to talk to everyone on the block or just pass them by and get to the checkpoint. You can make the world as big as you want to make it but there is also an underlying goal and mystery to solve that drives the story forward…. But seriously Who’s arm is that?!!!

LJ: This game is all story! Take the time to talk to everyone, read everything, and explore everywhere. The “choose your own adventure” element to the story’s dialogue really hits home as I can customize Mae to be just as snarky as I am in real life.

3) How did you find the controls and the game play?

P: The controls were nice and simple; you can learn the controls without a tutorial.

LJ: The controls are incredibly simplistic. Mechanically, this game plays as a basic sidescroller. The real victory here is the beautifully stylized art.

4) Were there any glaring problems with the game?

P: Nothing so far, I’ve been really enjoying it. I’m a narrative gamer so any time I can delve into a new world I’m right at home.

LJ: No.

5) What was the most exciting moment of your game play so far?

P: Oh definitely the band practice!! It was bringing me back to my guitar hero days and who doesn’t love a good sing along.

LJ: The games within the game are highly addicting. Singing along with my emo band in a guitar heroesque simulation and fighting skele-cats in a classic 8-bit dungeon crawler were excellent additions to the main story line.

6) How likely are you to continue playing the rest of the game?

P: I will be glued to this game until I beat it. I need to solve all the mysteries while being an angsty cat.

LJ: I’m hooked. I can’t wait to see where the story takes me…Mae…me.

7) How would you rank this game?

P: I rank this game 8 out of 10 excited Gregg wiggly arms

LJ: 4.7 out of 5 Meow Meow Beans

8) How does this game compare to other’s in its franchise (or other similar titles)?

P: It actually reminds me a lot of another favorite game of mine, “Gone Home”. That mystery of coming home and everything being different, having to solve what had happened while you were away, but with the addition of a ‘choose your own adventure’ dialogue. And with beautiful art work to boot Night In The Woods has me hooked.

LJ: Personally, I’ve never played a game like this before, but if there are other games out there like this, then I cannot wait to try those out as well, though I’d have to say Night In The Woods definitely sets the bar high.

Gaming: Digital vs Physical

By Eric Ashley (@flapjackashley)

Being a fan of older, retro (or “Classic”) games, I have been drug – nearly kicking and screaming – into this new digital age. It is inevitable, and there are benefits to both physical and digital media to be sure. But for me, and I suspect a lot of other “old school” gamers out there, I will always prefer to have my games physically with me in the real world. Does that make me an old fogey? Perhaps, but I don’t care.

The Good

So what are the benefits of going mostly digital in your gaming? It is quite nice to be able to have multiple games on your system without having to swap discs for those of us who are lazy. There are a growing number of remastered (and not remastered) classic titles that are available to play on the newer systems via download. You can get that new hot title immediately as opposed to having to preorder and mess around with crowds. Say goodbye to those clueless Mega Big Box store employees who don’t know where their Midnight release games are despite their department heavily advertising them. Sony and Microsoft operate under a very user-friendly system in which you can play your downloaded games on any system you choose to log into with your account details – although I believe there may be an eventual limit of how many systems can be currently active. But if you wanted to play your games on your friend’s console for the weekend, you could do so. Or if your system dies, just relog in on the new replacement and a few redownloads later, and you’re gold.

A huge plus is being able to buy games anytime and anywhere. If I have a hankering for a new game on my 3DS or Vita, I can buy one immediately. I don’t have to change out of my comfy sweatpants and put shoes on and spend gas to go to the game when it can just come to me. I could buy a new game on the toilet if I saw fit… which I don’t since that would be weird.

The Bad

The downsides of going mostly digital is more for collectors and nostalgia based. I love having artwork and cases for my games to display on a shelf. I like owning my games. I like owning my movies. I don’t like to depend on a company who, at any time, could effectively change their terms and conditions (since who actually reads those things when they update their policies) and could backdoor some restrictive DRM on games I already have purchased or games in the future. Technically, they could do sneaky things with physical games through a hardware update, but the chances of weird things happening with a digital game are much higher, in my Tin Foil Hat opinion. A downloaded game can, for obvious reasons, not be resold or traded in when tired of it. If my system fails or I have to get rid of it temporarily for monetary reasons, my games will be waiting for me to play again without having to spend time redownloading everything. Games are also getting more unwieldy in file sizes, so eventually no matter what system you have, you’re going to run out of built-in room.

Growing up, I loved – and I mean I loved – buying a new game. Not just because it was a new game, but there was a certain thrill of opening up a box containing the newest Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis game. Some people will even know what I am referring to as the “New Nintendo Game smell” in its cartridge plastic, wrapper and manuals for NES, SNES and N64 games. It was intoxicating and I’m not afraid to admit I loved to sniff it like the sniffer I am. You don’t get that with a downloaded game. Having recently bought Mario Golf: World Tour for Nintendo 3DS on cartridge still held a bit of excitement for me as an adult gamer that I wouldn’t have gotten with simply downloading it instead.

And the NintenDONT

And speaking of Nintendo, I am not alone in my slow adaption. For as much as I love them, everything about Nintendo’s setup for the Digital Age is so far behind that of Sony and Microsoft that it is embarrassing. Hardware-wise, for the Wii U to only come with 32GB of internal storage space (which ends up being decreased to around 25-26GB available to the user) is mind boggling… especially in the age where the Playstation 4 and Xbox One has 500GB standard. The Nintendo 3DS is even worse, only coming with a 4GB SD card for downloads (it has no real sizable internal memory for such options), and although that can be upgraded to 32GB, it is still very small. The Nintendo Switch? It, too, only comes with 32GB of storage – but at least allows for microSD cards (like the 3DS) and possibly even external storage options.

Account-wise, the aforementioned benefit of being able to easily replace downloaded games on replacement systems or sharing them between systems does not apply here. Your downloads are tied not to your Nintendo user ID, but to the console itself – meaning if your system dies suddenly, you are out those digital games, digital game saves, and even your user ID (or Friend Code on the 3DS) and Club Nintendo ID as it dies with that console. Sure, you can call up Nintendo, but you have to beg for them to release that ID and/or games so it can be placed on a new system, but they have a history of denying those requests. If you buy a new “Limited Edition” 3DS, you can perform a system transfer from your old to your new rather painlessly, but even with that Nintendo limits the time frame of how often that can occur.

So in short, everything you have heard about gripes as far as Nintendo’s online system is true, and it’s every bit as frustrating as you can imagine.

The Inevitable

It’s inevitable that the digital age is here and is pushing people like me by the wayside. Take a look at the very limited store space for movies and music at any big box retailer… they are a quarter of the size they used to be, and a lot of that can be attributed to digital downloads and streaming. Microsoft knows this and, very mistakenly, jumped the gun about it with their early Xbox One DRM policies that send the cyber gaming world into a rage. But they, Sony and Nintendo all push their digital stores to the extent that we’re only a console cycle or two away from the stuff that Microsoft tried to implement could become a reality for everyone.

But there will always be a market for physical media, even if its a small one. Search out eBay and you’ll see high prices for new or “complete in box” games from collectors. I treat my games like gold because I think there can be just as much individuality and art into the packaging as there can be in the game itself.

There are clear benefits to both. But for me, opening up a new game in my hands is like Christmas morning, and because it’s a physical game, it is a joy that future updates and restrictions can’t take away from me that can provide a lifetime of memories going forward.

Jane the Virgin Recap: Chapter 56

By: Angela Russo (@Amaruki99)

Giddy from the generous offer for her romance novel, Jane is eager to finally escape from her domineering boss. She dances into work planning to put in her notice in a professional manner. When Chloe declines her resignation and insults the quality of her book deal, Jane promptly quits her job in an uncharacteristically blunt outburst and storms out. Unfortunately, when she receives the legal documents outlining the terms of her deal Jane realizes the rashness of her actions. To her dismay, the payout is staggered over the course of several months. Jane desperately attempts to apologize to Chloe and begs for her job back. Rafael suggests an alternate solution, offering her the job of lounge manager at the Marbella, urging Jane to have more faith in her abilities as a writer. Jane is encouraged by his support, and eventually accepts.

Meanwhile, the drama surrounding Xiomara’s unflattering portrayal on Rogelio’s reality show continues. Anxious to make amends, Rogelio sends ‘Ropology baskets’ to Jane’s family and quits the show. His abrupt departure yields less than favorable results. He is now being sued for breach of contract.

After Michael’s passing, Jane began struggling with panic attacks. The techniques she learned in therapy punctuate the episode as she encounters Dennis, (a detective who worked with Michael). He is in charge of investigating Scott’s demise. Jane is still furious with Dennis for posthumously investigating Michael’s dealings with crime lord Sin Rostro. Her agitation is so great that she lashes out at him physically multiple times. Matteo exhibits signs that he is gradually learning better behavioral skills, asking Jane if she used her words with Dennis. Proud of her son, Jane takes the lesson to heart, deciding to practice what she preaches. She arranges a meeting with Dennis, and the two make amends as he helps her to vent her anger in the boxing ring. She later discovers that this has been a healing experience. Memories of Michael no longer trigger a panic attack.

Scott’s death is proving to be dangerous for the Marbella’s newfound success. Petra hastens to do damage control, publicly dedicating a fountain and scholarship fund in memory of the departed lounge manager. Behind the scenes she combs through old Marbella footage in an attempt to shed light on the circumstances of his death, hoping to prove it was accidental. However, a flashback shows Petra pushing the body over the property line from the Marbella to the Fairwick. In the present, Rafael has taken on greater responsibility at the hotel. As the episode closes, we see him talking with a friend he made in prison. Rafael says he is relieved that the cops have ruled Scott’s death an accident.

Jane

The past three years have changed Jane. She is a different person now in more ways than one. I sincerely doubt that “Jane the Googler,” of earlier seasons would be unaware of the details involved in establishing a book deal. Then again, Jane has also never been one to be violent in her anger. The writers do an admirable job of continuing realistic emotional fallout after Michael’s death. I applaud the inclusion of the cognitive behavioral techniques that Jane employs to manage her panic attacks. It is an important and informative snippet of hope to those struggling with anxiety. Her struggles are further utilized as a positive teaching opportunity for Matteo. Children learn how to deal with their own emotions by modeling their parents. This thoughtful look at relationships and emotion coaching serves to balance out the ridiculous dramatics and shocking twists that are characteristic of the show.

Dennis’s Investigation of Michael

It is entirely possible that Dennis’s role in the episode was purely to further the progress of Jane’s emotional journey. However, I do wonder about his investigation into Michael. Was it truly about Michael or is he somehow involved with Rose? What if he was gathering intel for her to see if there was anything else that could implicate her whereabouts? Dennis is lead investigator into Scott’s death, and Rose was known to have cops on her payroll. Could he be another pawn in her schemes? After he and Jane make up he seems to have no further interest in proceeding with his questions regarding Scott’s death. If Rose is involved, could he be helping her cover up the murder?

Who Killed Scott?

Although Scott’s death has been ruled an accident, that would be far too open and shut for Jane the Virgin. Petra’s sinister flashback and Rafael’s suspicious conversation with an ex-con certainly indicate that there is more here than meets the eye….or is there? I wonder if these convenient sneak peeks are just convenient misdirection. Petra could simply be determined to keep scandal away from the Marbella…but what about Rafael? I can honestly say I wasn’t quite buying his new “zen Rafael,” persona. However, he has shown ample evidence that he has changed through his relationship with Jane. While he very well may be up to something, I’m hesitant to jump all the way to murder.

Past seasons of Jane the Virgin prove that what is unsaid and who is unseen are often the most ominous culprits of all. While I still harbor strong suspicions about Rose’s activity in the past three years, there are others on the sidelines to consider – Rafael’s girlfriend Abbey Whitman for example. Her near invisibility in each episode is a very prominent and purposeful feature. Even the narrator continues openly forgetting her. Even less present is Petra’s twin sister Anezka. As Scott’s wife you would think that there would be some mention of her when his body washes ashore…and yet she is completely M.I.A. Anezka’s absence further reminds me of Magda. Last time we saw her, she orchestrated Petra’s paralysis, and was disapproving of Anezka’s relationship with Scott. Full of motive and mystery, join me next week for a new and exciting chapter!
