Game On! Relive Your Childhood With A Retro Game Party

by Gwendolyn Y. McNutt, CSEP (@gmcnuttplans)

To say that I loved playing games as a child is an understatement. Oh, and by the way, I still love them. Not that I don’t enjoy video games, because I most certainly do, but I also miss playing good old fashioned board games in the basement with my sister. I think we had every Milton Bradley and Hasbro game ever invented. Not only did I love playing board games as a child, I was also consumed with games and toys like Twister, Etch a Sketch, Jacks, Silly Putty, Slinkys, and of course my Rubik’s Cube. I spent countless hours trying to figure out how to align that crazy 3-D combination puzzle. Thank you very much Mr. ErnÅ‘ Rubik. And, oh yes, I can’t forget about my View-Master. For you youngsters, that’s a very early version of virtual reality. If you’re too young to remember any of these games and toys, my heart breaks for you; and I could go on for hours about my favorite toys including my Easy Bake Oven, but, I digress.

My personal walk down memory lane and into toy box heaven, has made me really nostalgic for the toys and games of my youth; and, therefore, I asked my friends to join me for a retro game party. A night featuring childhood memories, games and the food and snacks we loved as kids. Along with a jam-packed table of board games and retro toys to play. Think, Jerry Seinfeld playing with the antique toy collection, but everyone has permission to play; and food and favors have been added to make it a real party. However, if I’m really being honest, I actually just wanted to play some of my favorite childhood games.

Throwback theme parties are by far my favorite events to plan. There’s so much opportunity to be creative and incorporate things you loved from the past. For this party, I selected a retro games theme, but you can pick from a variety of theme options like era, location, movies, etc. There are a wide range of possibilities to celebrate good food and good times with your friends.

Games, games and more games. Since this celebration is centered around games – and no party is complete without them, we’ll start there. Make sure your guests bring their competitive nature and playful spirit to the party. But, before settling down with your board games, kick off the night with a spirited Rubik’s Cube competition or Karaoke contest. Those interactive games are sure fire ways to get your group excited. Once you get everyone into the competitive spirit, break out the games and toys and revisit your childhood – one game at a time.

Now that you’ve lined up your games, don’t forget about the food. We weren’t fancy when we were kids, so why should we be now. Remember, you’re revisiting your childhood, so you might as well eat like one too. You can keep it simple with pizza, half sandwiches, hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and other fun and easy finger foods. However, you can still embrace the theme by giving your sandwiches and snacks game inspired names like “Texas Hold’em Turkey” or “Pool Ball Cheese Balls.” And top off your meal with some game inspired sweet treats like “Domino Brownies,” “Monopoly Cookies,” or a “Stacked Deck” of cupcakes.

Add in some clever nostalgic drinks from the vault like classic sodas in bottles or milkshakes to share with your guests. And just because you’re reliving your childhood, that doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate some adult beverages into your party plans. In fact, they may actually enhance your game playing fun.

Finally, tie it all together with decorations and fun favors for your event guests. Start with a focal point in the room, such as a board game tower centerpiece. Your guests will get to check out all the games they’ll have a chance to play later in the evening. Using the games as a centerpiece will save on your budget by playing double duty. Some fun favors for your party include vintage candy like ring pops, which are always a retro fan favorite. Yo-Yos, Silly Putty and Slinkys also make great favor gifts for guests. Another fun activity I like to have at my events are craft tables. It allows your guests to not only interact, but also show their creativity. A great craft activity for this party are Shrinky Dinks, guests can color their plastic pieces, and then the host can pop them into the oven while the games kick-off.

In just a few simple and inexpensive steps, you have the makings of a great night in with your friends. You can make your party as simple or as elaborate as you like. The idea is to connect and interact with one another. So, head up to the attic, pull out those old memories, and let the games begin!

Fire Emblem Heroes Mobile Game Review

By: Mary Rakas

In 2016, Nintendo broke into the world of mobile gaming with its release of Miitomo in March and Super Mario Run in December. Nintendo’s latest installment on the mobile platform, Fire Emblem Heroes, made its debut in February of this year.

The Fire Emblem spinoff, available on iOS and Android devices, takes place in the lands of the Emblian Empire and the Askran Kingdom. The Empire holds the power to close portals to other worlds, while the Kingdom has the ability to open them. War breaks out when the Emblian Empire, ruled by Veronica, begins invading the other worlds, mind-controlling the heroes from other games in the franchise and using them to attack the Askran Kingdom.

Instead of joining the protagonists as a tactician as in past games, players are drawn into the story as a legendary summoner who, you guessed it, can call forth other characters from the franchise to join the Order of Heroes. Sibling Askran royals, Prince Alfonse and Princess Sharena, head the order along with their faithful commander, Anna (fans of the series will recognize her from past games). With the help of the summoner, the Order defeats the mind-controlled heroes in combat to free them from the Empire’s control.

Features:

Players earn orbs, hero feathers, badges, shards, and crystals, among other items, by beating chapters of the main story and completing special tasks. Orbs can be used to summon characters, revive fallen party members during combat, etc. Characters are divided into blue, green, red, and colorless units. Five orbs are required for one summon; however, if more than one character of the same color is summoned, the cost goes down for each consecutive character.

Characters range from one to five stars, with five being the most rare. The higher star rating a character has, the better his/her stats and skills will be. Gems and crystals can be used to level up characters, while badges and feathers can be used to upgrade a character’s star rating.

The game also has modes outside of the main story, including Arena Duels, where players can compete in online battles, and Special Maps, which players can complete to earn orbs and gain new characters. A nice aspect of the game is the Training Tower, which is used to level up characters.

Gameplay:

I’ve been a faithful follower of the Fire Emblem franchise for about ten years. The first thing I noticed in Heroes was an alteration to the weapon triangle. Swords still beat axes, axes beat lances, and lances beat swords. Likewise, there is also a magic triangle; in this case, red magic beats green, green beats blue, and blue beats red. However, the effectiveness of magic against weapons has changed. Whereas in past games, magic did not deal more or less damage against weapon-wielding units (barring a few exceptions), it does in Heroes. If, for example, you attack a sword wielder with a blue tome mage, you’ll deal much more damage than you would against an axe user, which is a green type unit.

Another significant change from standard Fire Emblem games comes in the simplicity of the storyline. In past games, there were politics, subplots, and intrigue that held players’ interest and kept them guessing about what would happen next. In Heroes, the story couldn’t be more straightforward. Veronica refuses to the close the gateways to other worlds. She continuously invades those worlds, takes control of the characters, and players defeat them in battle. There is no deviation from this cycle.

However, there are hints of a deeper plot brewing. Extra chapters outside of the main story (paralogues and xenologues) have been released. The Xenologue contains cut scenes showing a masked character, who remains unidentified, asking Veronica if she feels like someone else has been controlling her. She says no, but that she hears a voice telling her to kill.

Thoughts:

As with most mobile games, people intent on playing without purchasing in-app are up for as big a challenge as playing Fire Emblem games on hard and lunatic modes. So far, Nintendo has been generous with orbs. Quite a few missions have recently been added that offer three orbs as a reward for each. I have spent zero dollars so far, and have 49 characters out of the 200 character allotment (this can be increased using orbs). I have three five-star characters and many four-star ones, but it’s difficult to upgrade a character to the highest level. It takes 20,000 feathers and twenty badges of the unit’s color to upgrade a character from four to five stars. Feathers are awarded for participating in the arena and for sending characters home, but it’s too small an amount to make a significant difference.

Overall, Fire Emblem Heroes is worth a try, but hopefully more updates will be released. I’ve beaten the entire main story, and after that there isn’t much replay value. I’m hoping Nintendo releases more paralogues and xenologues, and delves deeper into the potential mysteries surrounding Veronica.

Yo Ho, A Pirates Life at 50!

By Craig Barton (@disnerdcraig)

“We’re rascals and scoundrels, we’re villains and knaves, Drink up me ‘earties, yo ho. We’re devils and black sheep, we’re really bad eggs, drink up me ‘earties, yo ho!”

When viewers sat down by their televisions to watch the latest episode of “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” on January 3rd, 1965, they were treated to a celebration of Disneyland’s “Tencennial.” The 10th anniversary of Walt Disney’s “Happiest Place on Earth” included a Disney all-star celebration, with everyone from Mickey and Minnie Mouse to the newest addition to the Disney family, Mary Poppins, on hand to ring in Disneyland’s tenth year. With great pomp and ceremony, viewers at home were invited to join in the celebration (complete with dancing cake pieces and candles!), and were also given a sneak peek of projects that lay in store for the future of the park.

As Walt and “Miss Disneyland Tencennial” (Disneyland ambassador) Julie Reihm visited Walt’s Imagineers, they previewed upcoming attractions, such as “it’s a small world,” a Museum of the Weird (this project would evolve into The Haunted Mansion), and Pirates of the Caribbean. As Walt walked Julie through a miniaturized model of Pirates, he would tell her the story of how guests would ride down a waterfall and visit the world of the pirates. Pirates who were up to their shenanigans, raiding towns, looting, and “things.” “Things” was a big word for Walt Disney. As many of his Imagineers and others who worked closely with him often noted, there was a connotation to that word – when Walt said “Things,” you knew there was excitement and untold imagination in store. You never knew what those things might be, but you couldn’t wait to find out!

The public would see exactly what mysteries and “things” were in store with Pirates on March 18th, 1967. Sadly, Walt would never get to see his completed vision, as he passed away in December of 1966. However, as one of the last attractions he personally worked on, Pirates of the Caribbean has stood the test of time as a monument to his imagination, as well as the hard work and brilliance of the Imagineering department of the Walt Disney Company.

50 years later, Pirates still captivates. Ride Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland or Walt Disney World, and you’ll hear other riders clapping and singing along to X Atencio’s masterful “Yo Ho, a Pirate’s Life For Me!” They’ll be reminding each other that “Dead Men Tell no Tales” before plunging down a waterfall into caverns below. Although variations have been made to the attraction throughout the years (In 1997, pirates started chasing women for their food instead of chasing them because they were pirates chasing women. Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa, and Davy Jones were added to the story following the success of the Pirates movie franchise in 2006.), the pirates still want the redhead, and Carlos’s wife still implores him not to be “cheeken.” Not to mention, there’s many a DisNerd out there that still can’t resist the smell of Pirate Water.

I’d like to take a moment to say thank you, Walt. Thank you for your vision, leadership, and imagination in not just this attraction, but so many others that have stood the test of time. Thank you to the Imagineers that put so much love and skill into Pirates – Claude Coats, Blaine Gibson, Marc Davis, Alice Davis – just to name a very few. You are all the reason this attraction is still loved fifty years later. Between you and Walt, there are some amazing “things” to experience here.

And Happy 50th anniversary, Pirates of the Caribbean. The masterful work put into this attraction has made it beloved by fans worldwide. You’ve inspired attractions in five different theme parks, launched a cinematic franchise spanning five different movies, and left many a generation singing about how they’re loved by their mommies and dads…

Drink up, me ‘earties, Yo Ho!
