Nashville and Agents of SHIELD Actor Powers Boothe Passes Away at 68

By: Michaela Bush

Hollywood lost yet another splendid actor this week.

Powers Boothe passed away in his sleep on Mother’s Day, May 14th, at the age of 68. He was the first in his family – who owned a plantation and sharecropped – to obtain higher education, earning a degree from Southwest Texas State University and then pursuing acting at the Southern Methodist University. Surely, his motivation and talent were not wasted throughout his career.

Boothe was well known for his roles as Lamar Wyatt on Nashville, V.P. Noah Daniels on 24, and of course Gideon Malick in Agents of SHIELD and The Avengers. He also voiced the Red Tornado on the TV series Justice League Unlimited. Additionally, he worked on his share of Westerns, such as Tombstone and Extreme Prejudice, as well. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, with his well-known gravelly voice, that he would fit right into the role of a gun-slinging, horseback-riding baddie. He played a host of villainous roles throughout his career as an actor; perhaps he was even typecast.

He was an award-winning actor, receiving an Emmy in 1980 for the miniseries Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones — the acceptance of which caused him to cross a picket line during an actors’ strike at the time.

Actor Beau Bridges was the first to break the news of Boothe’s passing, posting on his Twitter feed, “It’s with great sadness that I mourn the passing of my friend Powers Boothe. A dear friend, great actor, devoted father & husband.” 140 characters can’t describe the loss of this wonderful actor, but several members of the Agents of SHIELD family took to Twitter in order to mourn the loss as well, joined by many other actors who worked with or were touched by Boothe.

According to IMDb, Boothe was not currently working on any projects, with the persona of Gideon Malick the last villainous role he would embody.

Boothe is survived by his wife and children.

CW Reveals Black Lightning Trailer

CW has another series based on a DC Entertainment property coming to the network. Black Lightning follows a high school principal who moonlighted as a superhero. He gave up the costume but found himself drawn back to it when violence escalated in the streets. You can check out the full trailer below.

The series stars Cress Williams (Code Black) as Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning alongside China Anne McClain (Grown Ups) and Nafessa Williams (Code Black) who play his daughters, Jennifer and Anissa. The series is produced by Greg Berlanti, who is known for his other comic adaptations on CW: Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow.

However, although the other DC adaptations exist in the same universe and have crossover episodes, for now, Black Lightning will be on its own: "Black Lightning at this time is not part of the Arrowverse, it's a separate thing," CW's Network president Mark Pedowitz explained (via The Wrap). "It will not be part of a five-way crossover. However, we will be doing another four-way crossover this year."

The character Black Lightning first appeared in Black Lightning #1 in 1977. He was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. He has an electricity-based powerset, and much like the trailer shows, he's determined to clean up the streets of crime.

At this time, there is no information for when this new series will debut.

Cast Shake-Up Ahead for Season Seven of Once Upon a Time

By: Michaela Bush

Trouble’s brewing in Storybrooke…or more like, the less-than-fairytale land of ABC Network and actor contracts. The popular show Once Upon a Time will be seeing major changes in the upcoming season.

There have been six total departures for Once Upon a Time prior to season seven. Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow), Josh Dallas (Charming), Jared Gilmore (Henry), Emilie de Ravin (Belle), Rebecca Mader (Zelena), and Jennifer Morrison (Emma) will all be leaving the show — or at least, they will no longer be series regulars. Colin O’Donoghue (Hook), Lana Parrilla (Regina), and Robert Carlyle (Rumple) will be staying on board, along with Storybrooke’s newest additions, Alison Fernandez (Jane the Virgin) and Andrew J. West (The Walking Dead). Fernandez is playing the role of a character named Lucy, while West is playing the role of ‘Older Henry,’ which means that while Gilmore may not be a regular anymore, it doesn’t mean that we’ll lose the character.

In a joint statement, the show’s executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz said, “Words can’t do justice to what Ginny, Josh, Emilie, Rebecca, and Jared brought to Once Upon a Time…Never have we had the privilege of working with a more talented group of collaborators. Each brought unique talent, incredible intelligence, and their own individual bit of magic as they gave life to these iconic characters. We can’t thank them enough for the hard work, dedication and passion they delivered day in and day out. Without them, there would be no Once Upon a Time.”

Morrison’s departure came as a bit of a surprise, but she has agreed to appear in at least one episode of season seven. At this, Horowitz and Kitsis stated that, “She [Morrison] will always be a part of the show and its heart and soul…just because Jennifer won’t be back every week doesn’t mean we won’t see our savior again.”

Further, they said, “As Once continues, this group will always be the beating heart of the show. And even though we won’t be with them every week, in a show about magic and hope, we fervently believe it won’t be the last we see of them.” Couldn’t have said it better myself!

What do you think will happen in season seven considering the massive loss of these actors? Is it time for Storybrooke to start a new chapter? Do you think a reboot will eventually be in the works?

Prison Break: Resurrection – “Wine Dark Sea” Review

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

The Prison Break: Resurrection journey is winding down, with only two episodes remaining, but that doesn’t mean the action has stopped! The escapees are still a long way from home, and a lot can happen during that time. This week’s episode had some thrills, as well as a lot of heart.

By the end of this week’s episode of the show, “Wine Dark Sea,” it felt like there was very little mystery left to the season. Opening the revival season with far more questions than answers, this episode felt like a marked detour from that, perhaps giving too many answers without enough mystery. Identities were confirmed, conspiracies revealed, and we have been left with only a promise that Michael has a plan to make things right – but we haven’t really seen him with a solid plan (or contingency plan) since…well…the “Contingency” episode. The unique mark of Prison Break in the past has been the incredibly intelligence of Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) applied in extraordinary situations. Yet episode seven appears to find everyone still, sadly, winging it. Even the villain, Poseidon, set up to be the dark side equivalent to Michael seems to be making some unfortunate moves. And Sara’s (Sarah Wayne Callies) utter lack of foresight and planning near the close of the episode only entrenched the plot further into predictable (and frustrating) territory.

This is not to say that the episode still failed to entertain. Even with no real plan or thoughtful exposition, “Wine Dark Sea” still had some fun with Navy SEALs, tear gas, explosions, and the like. The thrill of the chase between Sara and Poseidon (whose identity has really truly been confirmed in this episode), while not overly cunning, is still exciting!

The real strength of this week’s episode of Prison Break: Resurrection was that it was a “feels” episode. The posse of characters has rightly been cut down, eliminating many of the characters from Michael’s Ogygia Prison crew who, honestly, didn’t really connect with most viewers. With fewer distracting secondary characters who added little to the story, “Wine Dark Sea” was able to run free with the emotions of the remaining members. (You know, the ones we care about.) Whip (Augustus Prew) showed something deeper and more vulnerable than his usual sarcastic attitude, which was refreshing. Additionally, “Wine Dark Sea” brought a heartfelt reunion that took us all back to the infirmary days of the first season of Prison Break. The writers and director were smart in allowing the moments speak for themselves, without filling them with unnecessary dialogue or movement. A sincere and tangible connection could be felt, and it honestly felt like the days of old.

That wasn’t the only reunion worth talking about in this week. Sucre (Amaury Nolasco) finally found his way back into the story, and right into our hearts! In fact, if there was a highlight to this week’s episode, it was Sucre. His humor and lightness have been desperately needed, and we can only hope that the remaining two episodes of the season will keep him around. Michael’s old cellmate is loyal to a fault, a friend that we would all like to have given the choice. And his loyalty continues to know no bounds, even in season five of Prison Break.

The real question is – what has T-Bag (Robert Knepper) been doing? That prosthetic hand wasn’t just for fun and giggles, and he’s far too suspicious to follow along with a plan he feels he has no control of. Prison Break: Resurrection has potentially lost some opportunities with his character, who somehow makes everything a little more interesting than it has a right to be. But, here’s to hoping that he’ll make his way back to the screen next week!

Overall, this week’s episode may have lacked plot, but what it lost in action it made up for with emotional content. With certain character connections, the core of what makes the show great were rediscovered. To see if Prison Break: Resurrection can continue to hold onto the things we all want, and maybe through some twists in along the way, tune into Fox on Tuesday nights at 9/8c!

Anne With an E: Netflix Series Review

By: Jessica Alewine (@awkwardalewine)

Last Friday, Netflix premiered the latest attempt to adapt L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables with Anne with an E. The series, created in association with Canada’s CBC, endeavors to adapt the beloved tale of young Anne Shirley for the small screen. Netflix has seen much success lately in adaptations, including The Little Prince and A Series of Unfortunate Events, so many, including myself, expected Anne with an E to prove itself to be an accurate adaptation worthy of much fanfare. However, due to a lack of faithfulness to the original content, a misinterpreted tone, and a forceful amount of political messaging, the series will leave many viewers feeling distraught that their favorite series has been given such a shameful treatment. That said, those who can look past the adaptation’s failures to see the heart of the series might find themselves enraptured by the stunning cinematography, the charming acting, and the heartbreaking story Anne with an E presents.

Anne of Green Gables has been beloved for centuries for its charming heroine, bright storyline, and hopeful message. Despite the heartbreaking ending of the first book in the series, Anne of Green Gables always remained a bright and cheerful story. The Netflix version of the series, however, is bleak from the beginning and only grows darker. The series, like the original book, follows young orphan Anne Shirley as she attempts to find a home with the elderly Cuthbert siblings. The book and the show both explore her transition from a lonely, overworked orphan to a beloved daughter. They both showcase her friendship with Diana Barry, her growing rivalry with Gilbert Blythe, and her struggles to fit in a town that’s not quite sure what to make of her. The similarities, honestly, end there. While the major plot points of the book are preserved, including the beloved slate scene, cherry cordial mishap, and the Minnie Mae incident, we are given a much darker take on the story.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The writers and creators of the show not only take creative liberties in adding a traumatic backstory for young Anne, but they add further trauma for the whole town. Matthew and Marilla are both given tragic romances from their youth and a childhood trauma centered on the death of an invented younger brother. One of Anne’s classmates is found to be in an inappropriate relationship with her teacher and teased about it by the rest of the class. The writers also took the liberty of writing in the death of Gilbert Blythe’s father, in what I assume is an attempt to create common ground for Anne and Gilbert, and give Matthew a non-fatal heart attack, which leads him to nearly commit suicide. The original story, which already featured its share of heartbreak, was given a slew of problems not fitting with the original tone or characters of the novel. While the series retains the major plot points of the original book, it has adopted a bleak tone more fitting a story by one of the Bronte sisters.

END SPOILERS

In addition to the added trauma and heartache, the writers took the liberty to add in political messaging not originally in the story. While feminism is clearly relevant to the story of Anne, it was not featured as heavily in the original story as it is in this adaptation. This is not a major point of irritation for me, since I did agree with the message, but it seemed rather forceful and heavy-handed. Anne is considered a feminist icon, with her great value of education and her equal relationship with her male peers, but they took it a bit far here. I fear that unlike the original story, this adaptation will be too serious and too embedded with messages to appeal to a younger audience. It makes it far less accessible for younger viewers. This had such a great opportunity to create a new generation of Anne of Green Gables fans, and I worry that opportunity was missed.

That said, the show itself was fairly enjoyable if you could overlook the fact that it was supposed to be an adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. The cinematography was stunning and I was every bit as much in love with Green Gables as Anne was. The tight shots of actors in pivotal moments, the soft lighting, and the wide shots of the scenery create a cozy setting that is absolutely addicting. I found myself more interested in the filming techniques and methods than the story, despite the abundance of drama. The creators said they were inspired by the cinematography in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice, and the filming similarities are evident. Fans of that film will fall in love with the cinematography of this series.

Additionally, the acting, particularly by young Amybeth McNulty and Lucas Jade Zumann – Anne and Gilbert, respectively – was incredibly layered and nuanced. While the character of Anne was slightly butchered by this adaptation, with her mental distress and imaginative speeches combining to seem psychotic, McNulty fully committed to the character and brought the writing to life. Her emotional displays during her rejection, her traumatic flashbacks, and her own growing feelings for Gilbert will leave viewers gutted. Zumann, our young Gilbert, turns the originally aggravating character into the ultimate charmer, which is out of place in the series but speaks to the abilities of the young actor. I predict now that we will be seeing more of both of these young actors going forward.

Finally, while the plot itself might be the most problematic part of this adaptation, it is still an important story to be told. There isn’t a lot of media out there that accurately represents the struggles of orphans in the late 1800s. The story, while incredibly dark and bleak, is a stunning tale of redemption, adoption, and family. It’s just not the story of Anne Shirley we’ve all come to know and love.

There are two major takeaways from watching Anne with an E. First, this is an absolutely terrible adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. The tone, the characters, and the delightful nature of the original story were all disregarded in favor of a new, more serious story. Fans of the book will find themselves sorely disappointed and potentially enraged by the new adaptation. Second, this can be enjoyed as a solid period piece if the viewer is able to detach from any feelings about the original book. If you’re a diehard fan of the book, I’d avoid watching this series, but if you’re a casual fan or even just a Netflix addict, I’d encourage you to give it a try.
