Movies to See Before You Die: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

By: Willden Doherty (@Willden)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of a kind. There are no films I could think of that would be a great comparison. The film is about two people who, after a bad breakup, decide to erase each other from their memories and was inspired by real-life relationship experiences. It is not a feel-good film, although there are some of those moments in it. It visually captures every moment perfectly and uses mostly practical techniques. The sets and actors are used in such a way to create great uses of long takes.

This could easily be considered one of the top five performances of Jim Carrey’s career. Some might even argue it’s his best. We’ve seen him in more serious roles and this movie shows how good of an actor he is. This film also brings out the best of Kate Winslet. She plays a character that is completely different than any other role she has done. The supporting cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, Tom Wilkinson, and Kirsten Dunst, who help keep the film grounded. Even though there is one main storyline between the two leads, smaller ones appear that build upon the concept of memories.

However, beyond the performances, the camera could be considered the most important part of this film. The use of perspective is so unique and has rarely been seen before or since. Everything that would be done with CG today was practically done for this film. The placement of the actors, props, and set pieces allow the camera to flow between scenes seamlessly. The camera follows the actors with many close-up shots. With the use of cutaways, the actors can jump between multiple scenes in one shot.

I normally don’t recommend people to watch the behind the scenes features unless they are into film like myself, but I do recommend that everyone should watch them after viewing this film. It is a great way to see how the filmmaking process is adapted in an unusual way. Once you watch behind the scenes, you will likely be inclined to watch the film a second time. Every time I have seen this movie, I discover something new. This unique film experience is something everyone should see at least twice in their lifetime.

Revisiting Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie

By: Willden Doherty (@Willden)

When Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie was released in 1995, it was during the apex of the television series on which is was based. Power Rangers was a cultural phenomenon that still even continues to this day. To celebrate the release of the new Power Rangers reboot, it’s time to look back at the first movie.

Story:

The film’s story is not something to take seriously. It is goofy, dumb, and filled with action. It successfully captures the spirit of the original series, but add an updated look. If you really pay attention to the story, you will find that most of it doesn’t make any sense. The film isn’t canon to the original series, although the cast from the show is the same. All the acting was serviceable to carry the story forward. The standout, though, is Paul Freeman as Ivan Ooze. He does a great job of being very campy, but also feel very menacing. You buy into him being one of the most powerful beings alive as he is able to destroy Zordon without much effort and thus is now remembered as one of the top villains along with Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa. Having Zordon die does bring some weight upon the audience who has watched him on television.

The main story focuses on the Rangers getting new powers after having lost their old ones. It takes them to a new land where they have to fight ancient beasts to prove themselves. A secondary storyline surrounds the parents being manipulated to help Ooze power up his two main destroyers. A kid is at the center as he gathers all the children of Angel Grove to save their parents. The way Ivan Ooze is defeated has become memorable among fans. It is out of place from what the Power Rangers usually do, but seeing him getting kicked into a comet never gets old.

Visuals:

This film is a mixed bag between some great visuals and really bad ones. Most of the scenes are practical, with the fighting being reminiscent of the show. Overall, it feels like a bigger production because this is the first time everything was filmed in America. On the show, the actions scenes were taken from the original show from Japan with American storylines added. This time, there was no previous footage used, so the looks of the characters were more updated. The Ranger costumes look better, with more added details and abilities. Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd look the same to their counterparts on the show, but it works. Ivan Ooze has a distinct and memorable look that would have only worked in the film. Some of the set pieces are lit darker to bring a more adult feel.

The fighting had its good and bad moments. There are a lot of cool kicks and flips that are more stylized. The wire work, however, is very noticeable and can take you out of the moment. One scene with a skeletal dinosaur is very goofy to watch. The CG in this film does not hold up at all. It’s a shame, because the entire third act uses CG for the Zords and monsters. It really does take away from what was probably an awesome action sequence at the time.

Final Thoughts:

If you have never seen Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie, you can skip it. This not a good film overall as it is made more for kids than adults. Only those who were already Power Rangers fans will find some of the redeeming qualities. There is just enough heart and spirit that makes this film watchable. Let’s hope that the new movie reboot will be able to capture the spirit of what makes the Power Rangers series so great.

What We Know: Blade Runner 2049

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

“Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” Philip K. Dick asked in the title of his sci-fi novel. In 1982, Ridley Scott explored the novel in movie form with Blade Runner. Now, in 2017, we will journey to Blade Runner 2049.

Whether you’re excited about a sequel to the 1982 sci-fi flick, or maybe even dreading it, Blade Runner 2049 is coming. Original director Ridley Scott has been trying to expand the universe of blade runners and replicants for several years now, believing there is more of the story to tell. (Who are we to argue with Ridley Scott?) Back in 2009, Ridley and his brother Tony were working on a prequel project, called Purefold. It was planned to be a series of 5-10 minute long shorts. However, by 2010 the project was nixed due to lack of funding. But Scott didn’t let go of the Blade Runner dream, and in 2011 he was set to direct a sequel. He stepped down from the director’s chair in 2014, but he still wasn’t finished. Blade Runner 2049 was officially announced in 2016 with Scott as a producer and a writer (along with Michael Green and Hampton Fancher, a writer from the original Blade Runner).

ryan harrison

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (the French-Canadian director known for his work on films like Prisoners, Sicario, and Arrival) Blade Runner 2049 began principal photography shooting in July 2016 in Budapest, Hungary, and ended in November of the same year. Working with cinematographer Roger Deakins (Sicario, Prisoners), the sequel will use lots of practical effects and tricks (with some CG enhancements) to maintain the look and feel of the Blade Runner universe we remember, and Jóhann Jóhannson, (Arrival, Sicario) the Icelandic composer will be creating the sound of Blade Runner 2049, hopefully paying homage to the original soundtrack.

What can we expect in Blade Runner 2049? The R-rated sequel is set 30 years after the events of the original film, starring Harrison Ford as Deckard. L.A. looks much the same, as a visually stimulating environment with heavy Eastern influence and a hint of noir. The opening scene description, revealed by Scott, shows us the agricultural side of the world, similar to the wasteland outside major cities described in Philip K. Dick’s novel after World War Terminus. Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a blade runner in L.A., has uncovered a dark secret with the potential to throw humanity into chaos. Whatever that secret may be, it starts him on a search for Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who disappeared 30 years before.

Now, the Deckard questions are already coming. Where was Deckard? Why did he disappear? And most importantly, is he a replicant? Scott has sworn for years that Deckard is a replicant, but Villeneuve is a fan of the mystery surrounding Deckard and said, “We will take care of that mystery.” Very vague, Villeneuve. Does that mean the mystery will be maintained, or will we finally have a definitive answer? It looks like we’ll just have to go to the theater to get our answers.

Gosling will play the new lead, Officer K. Meanwhile, Ford will reprise his role as Deckard and will be joined by Edward James Olmos as the origami-folding Detective Goff. Ana de Armas (War Dogs) will play a character named Joi. Then, the mystery continues with the rest of the cast in undisclosed roles. Supporting actors will include Jared Leto (Suicide Squad), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Lennie James (The Walking Dead), David Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) and others, such as Barkhad Abdi, Hiam Abbass, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, and Sylvia Hoeks.

That’s the scoop on Blade Runner 2049! The film will be released October 6, 2017 in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D. For more news as the release approaches, you can check out the Blade Runner Facebook page or follow the official movie account on Twitter. Watch the official trailer below!
