National Geographic’s Jane: Movie Review

By: Haylee Fisher (@haylee_fisher)

There is no doubt Jane Goodall is a hero. Her life’s work has been devoted to the research and conservation of chimps and she has inspired generations with her tireless efforts in animal welfare. She is considered the world’s leading expert in chimps, but how did she get started? And how can her journey pave the way for others in the future?

In Jane, director Brett Morgen explores just that. Using previously unseen footage of her expeditions and field work, Morgen shines a light on what makes Goodall tick. It’s so far beyond just a love of chimps – it’s a maternal instinct. And her chimps reciprocate those feelings right back to Goodall. They know each other. They love each other. They’re family.

It’s easy to see where Goodall gets her passion and why she felt so supported pursuing her interests. Her mother is shown at the beginning of the film, offering encouragement and affection, and later it’s clear she receives the same devotion from her husband (who started off as a wildlife photographer and who shot much of the early footage in the film) and son.

So many times, documentaries can be boring. They can be tired and repetitive and not something an audience is jumping up and down to see. However, Jane is anything but boring. Morgen masterfully weaves the stories of Goodall’s early observations while creating a narrative arc that may not always be chronological, but is captivating. When Goodall first began her studies, she was a 26-year-old with no scientific degree and who hoped simply to gain acceptance from the chimps. Not only did that happen, but she discovered and reported on how chimps possess similarities to humans from toolmaking skills to communication capabilities and their predilection toward violence and in turn became the foremost primatologist in the world today.

Because so much of the story is told through narration, the music had to strike a balance – it had to both fill in gaps and not intrude on the action. Phillip Glass employs techniques he is known for – like sweeping, assertive melodies – to great affect in Jane.

There are scenes in Jane that will stay with you, from a baby chimp learning to walk to another expressing affection and thanks to Goodall. Because of these and so many more moments, you can’t help but feel inspired and empowered. Goodall was underestimated because she’s a woman, but it’s her mothering, nurturing temperament that has served as an asset during her studies. The lessons Goodall learns in the wild then parallel her life and even more so her role as a mother and those correlations Morgen makes are pure revelations. Through Jane, it is clear Morgen hopes Goodall’s story will serve as an inspiration for future generations, but most especially young girls who may want to one day follow in Goodall’s footsteps, and if this film is any indication, it is a path Goodall herself would no doubt encourage.

Arrow: “Tribute” Review

By: Ashley Binion (@ashleybinion)

Arrow‘s latest episode, “Tribute,” was a vast improvement from the previous one, “Fallout.” There were too many repeated story beats in “Fallout,” but “Tribute” showed that the series is willing and able to venture in a new direction.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

After a somewhat rough season-opening episode, Arrow stepped it up in episode two. Sometimes a season premiere has to do a ton of table setting. Now, looking back at “Fallout,” it was a pure set-up episode for the season to come.

Even though the change in Diggle becoming Green Arrow is not going to be permanent, allowing Arrow to step out of its comfort zone is something to be applauded. Six seasons in, a show can get complacent, but by shaking it up and making Diggle the Green Arrow, it gives the series a sense of a renewed energy.

Oliver realizing that his number one job now is being a father is the most self-actualized thing he has done this entire series. He finally gets it. It’s so refreshing to see Oliver get his head out of the sand. Throughout the series, he’s been so entrenched in himself that becoming a father has helped him become selfless. It’s amazing character growth. I just can’t wait for the episode where he eventually regresses.

Rene has been a tough character to figure out, but he finally has seemed to find his place. His budding relationship with Lance and now Oliver have been fantastic. Giving him a daughter toward the end of last season substantially helped his character. Being a father has been his best trait and now he is able to guide Oliver through his newfound parenthood. The scene between the two discussing the subject was great.

When it was revealed that Diggle had nerve damage, I was disappointed. I was hoping Arrow would journey into a PTSD storyline for the former soldier. For a character who is so strong, it would have been a much more interesting storyline to see him struggle with something that he can’t physically overcome, like he will his nerve damage. A physical injury is something easily overcome in a comic book show; just look at Felicity. She was paralyzed, but now thanks to some technology, she’s able to walk with no problem.

I was delighted to see Anatoly back. He is one of the few people from the island flashbacks that we are able to see in the present day. Creating relationships that survived beyond the island are the ones that have brought the best storylines. These relationships have a long and complicated history and create an inner struggle for Oliver when facing them. Over time, this became the advantage of having flashbacks. Anatoly’s journey with Oliver, like Slade’s, was one of brotherhood until it went wrong, so seeing him back and being an antagonist for Team Arrow is always a treat.

We need to applaud whoever does the opening title card sequence. They added symbols for the entire Team Arrow. For a few seasons now, the show has been an ensemble piece. It’s no longer a lone man on a mission and the series finally recognized that. Major props.

And finally, hey! A Batman reference! Good for you Arrow, good for you.

Alert: You Can Now Go to A Harry Potter-Inspired Camp for Adults

By: Haylee Fisher (@haylee_fisher)

For millions of Harry Potter fans across the globe, the one thing they all have in common is the wish for Hogwarts to be real. How amazing would it be to be sorted, take classes like Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts, play Quidditch, have dinner in the Great Hall, and more?

Now all of that and more is a possibility thanks to the Worthwich Wizarding Weekend, a magical retreat for adults 21+ taking place October 27-29.

During the camp, students will be sorted by house, just like in the Harry Potter books, participate in a wand-making class, pumpkin carving, and magical shopping.

They will also participate in a curriculum of classes including Potions, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Divination, Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, and broom-flying lessons. Further, each house will have daily practice in magical sports, with houses competing against each another in evening tournaments.

There will also be movie screenings each night, an assortment of food and drinks inspired by Harry’s world, and a House Cup competition

However, don’t be like Harry and cause mischief: rule-breaking will be punishable by removal of house points and assignment of detention.

The Worthwich Wizarding Weekend will take place at Parrie Haynes Ranch, located an hour from Austin, Texas, and 2 ½ hours from San Antonio. Tickets start at $400 for the three-day weekend and can be purchased here.
