DC to Marvel: Tom Hardy Makes a Change

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

Remember when Sony announced not too long ago that they were making a Venom spin-off movie? It’s still happening. And it looks like it’s got a rush order!

Despite the fact that Spider-Man is now firmly in the grips of the creative minds over at Marvel, Sony still has rights to the character and much of the universe he inhabits. Making the most of what they have, Sony announced a Venom spin-off film, and they’re already moving the project forward!

In March, Sony announced a release date for Venom, expecting to put the movie out October 5, 2018. But there’s more recent news on the Venom front, and it’s actually pretty exciting! The Dark Knight’s Bane…er, I mean Tom Hardy, has flipped from his DC roots with Batman to a Marvel character (gasp!) and has been cast as the lead of the project, set to play the angst-ridden Eddie Brock, the character infected by the dark symbiote. The project, initially thought by many to be a gamble unlikely to pay off, has suddenly gained ground and is raising the hopes of fans. With the Tom Hardy to star, the project reportedly already has director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) on board to helm the project.

What do you think about Sony’s casting choice and the project’s director? Are you expecting a hit or a flop?
