Doctor Strange’s Tilda Swinton Wants an Ancient One Spinoff

Doctor Strange’s Tilda Swinton Wants an Ancient One Spinoff

There’s something Oscar winner Tilda Swinton must really enjoy about her role as the Ancient One in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange.” Maybe it’s the fuss-free hairstyle, or the character’s non-nonsense badassery, or her intriguingly mysterious origins. Whatever it is, Swinton is eager to reprise the part — going so far as to lobby Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige for an Ancient One spinoff.

The revelation comes in an excerpt from an upcoming interview with Screen Crush, in which the actor was asked about her character’s backstory.

“I’m pretty confidently dropping hints in Kevin Feige’s ear about a prequel,” Swinton replied. “I’m constantly harassing him about that. I don’t know if it’ll get anywhere.”

When pressed about what form this harassment took, Swinton elaborated, saying, “Just leaving the odd hint … writing the odd note and putting it in his pocket. Writing lipstick messages in his mirror. Just seeing how far we get.”

It’s no secret  the part of the Ancient One was written specifically for Swinton, and it seems the experience of becoming a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been an enjoyable one, with the actor equating it to “being asked to join the circus.” “It’s just great,” Swinton said. “Nobody is working for Marvel who isn’t a super-fan. And it’s run by the biggest super-fan of them all.”

While Marvel’s upcoming movie slate filled to overflowing for the next several years, it seems doubtful an Ancient One prequel is on the horizon. However, perhaps Swinton’s character could make a cameo in another film.

Directed by Scott Derrickson, “Doctor Strange” stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton. It hits theaters on Nov. 4.
