Nashville and Agents of SHIELD Actor Powers Boothe Passes Away at 68

By: Michaela Bush

Hollywood lost yet another splendid actor this week.

Powers Boothe passed away in his sleep on Mother’s Day, May 14th, at the age of 68. He was the first in his family – who owned a plantation and sharecropped – to obtain higher education, earning a degree from Southwest Texas State University and then pursuing acting at the Southern Methodist University. Surely, his motivation and talent were not wasted throughout his career.

Boothe was well known for his roles as Lamar Wyatt on Nashville, V.P. Noah Daniels on 24, and of course Gideon Malick in Agents of SHIELD and The Avengers. He also voiced the Red Tornado on the TV series Justice League Unlimited. Additionally, he worked on his share of Westerns, such as Tombstone and Extreme Prejudice, as well. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, with his well-known gravelly voice, that he would fit right into the role of a gun-slinging, horseback-riding baddie. He played a host of villainous roles throughout his career as an actor; perhaps he was even typecast.

He was an award-winning actor, receiving an Emmy in 1980 for the miniseries Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones — the acceptance of which caused him to cross a picket line during an actors’ strike at the time.

Actor Beau Bridges was the first to break the news of Boothe’s passing, posting on his Twitter feed, “It’s with great sadness that I mourn the passing of my friend Powers Boothe. A dear friend, great actor, devoted father & husband.” 140 characters can’t describe the loss of this wonderful actor, but several members of the Agents of SHIELD family took to Twitter in order to mourn the loss as well, joined by many other actors who worked with or were touched by Boothe.

According to IMDb, Boothe was not currently working on any projects, with the persona of Gideon Malick the last villainous role he would embody.

Boothe is survived by his wife and children.
