Trouble’s brewing in Storybrooke…or more like, the less-than-fairytale land of ABC Network and actor contracts. The popular show Once Upon a Time will be seeing major changes in the upcoming season.
There have been six total departures for Once Upon a Time prior to season seven. Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow), Josh Dallas (Charming), Jared Gilmore (Henry), Emilie de Ravin (Belle), Rebecca Mader (Zelena), and Jennifer Morrison (Emma) will all be leaving the show — or at least, they will no longer be series regulars. Colin O’Donoghue (Hook), Lana Parrilla (Regina), and Robert Carlyle (Rumple) will be staying on board, along with Storybrooke’s newest additions, Alison Fernandez (Jane the Virgin) and Andrew J. West (The Walking Dead). Fernandez is playing the role of a character named Lucy, while West is playing the role of ‘Older Henry,’ which means that while Gilmore may not be a regular anymore, it doesn’t mean that we’ll lose the character.
In a joint statement, the show’s executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz said, “Words can’t do justice to what Ginny, Josh, Emilie, Rebecca, and Jared brought to Once Upon a Time…Never have we had the privilege of working with a more talented group of collaborators. Each brought unique talent, incredible intelligence, and their own individual bit of magic as they gave life to these iconic characters. We can’t thank them enough for the hard work, dedication and passion they delivered day in and day out. Without them, there would be no Once Upon a Time.”
Morrison’s departure came as a bit of a surprise, but she has agreed to appear in at least one episode of season seven. At this, Horowitz and Kitsis stated that, “She [Morrison] will always be a part of the show and its heart and soul…just because Jennifer won’t be back every week doesn’t mean we won’t see our savior again.”
Further, they said, “As Once continues, this group will always be the beating heart of the show. And even though we won’t be with them every week, in a show about magic and hope, we fervently believe it won’t be the last we see of them.” Couldn’t have said it better myself!
What do you think will happen in season seven considering the massive loss of these actors? Is it time for Storybrooke to start a new chapter? Do you think a reboot will eventually be in the works?
