It’s time to make an escape. Again. In less than a month, we’ll see our favorite break-out stars back on the screen for an event series on Fox, where they don’t just get out of jail, they try to get out of a country! Several years later, Prison Break is back! Here’s what we know so far.
Prison Break originally ran from 2005 to 2009 on Fox. We were all mesmerized by the clever writing and interesting characters. But those events were 7 years ago, and with the death of Michael Scofield, we were disappointed, but somehow still had some closure. However, in August 2015 a pilot was ordered, and the revival series was officially greenlit in January 2016. Series alumni Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller have been working together on the CW, and with the rekindling of their connection, they began to talk about Prison Break, and Miller reports a realization that there “was more to the story.” Talks about interest began with Fox, and the response was positive. But the show, recently titled Prison Break: Resurrection, isn’t just coming back from the dead (pun intended) because the studio and stars were interested. The show is also coming back due to audience demand! Prison Break is still one of the top 10 most watched shows on Netflix!
Production on Prison Break: Resurrection began in April 2016 in Vancouver, after series leads Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell wrapped up filming on other shows in the area. A majority of the filming actually occurred on location, in the North Africa country of Morocco. Returning to Vancouver to wrap filming in July 2016, the work for the 9 episode season was finished. While the season will be short, due to the filming schedules of the actors involved, when asked on Twitter if there would be a follow-up season, on March 5, the writers (@PBWritersRoom) stated, “If so, we did our best to give you a satisfying end, but if our ratings are high enough, who knows what’s next?” So, although originally intended to be a short, single season revival, if you love it, you might get more!
While the show is going international and expanding the boundaries of the story, Prison Break: Resurrection is intelligently keeping its winning team, bringing back the show’s creator Paul T. Scheuring as a writer and executive producer. He is joined on the executive producing team by Vaul Wilmott, Michael Horowitz, Marty Adelstein, Neil H. Moritz, Dawn Olmstead, and Nelson McCormick. The theme song will be new, but has been created by the show’s (incredibly talented) original theme composer, Ramin Djawadi.
The original team doesn’t end with the showrunners! Although characters have evolved and changed, you’ll see familiar faces, such as T-Bag (Robert Knepper), C-Note (Rockmond Dunbar), Fernando Sucre (Amaury Nolasco), and Paul Kellerman (Paul Adelstein). Of course, where would the show be without the core group, to include Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), his brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), and his wife Sara Tancredi/Scofield (Sarah Wayne Callies)?
Directed by Guy Ferland, the show will have a plethora of new faces. We will be introduced to Jacob Anton Ness (Mark Feuerstein), new husband to Sara Tancredi, and professor of economics and game theory at a university. We will also meet Sheba (Inbar Lavi), a Yemeni activist and freedom fighter who might become a love interest for Lincoln. Michael will also have new co-conspirators, such as Ja (Ricky Yune), a Korean identity thief and Sid (Kunal Sharma), a prisoner because of his sexuality. The cast also includes Whip (Augustus Prew), Van Gogh (Steve Mouzakis), Cyclops (Amin El Gamal), and A&W (Marina Benedict).
“Hold up!” you say. “Didn’t Michael Scofield die at the end of season 4?” We certainly thought so! But it seems that Prison Break: Resurrection was named so for more than one reason. Fox CEO Dana Walden has promised a “logical and believable explanation to why the characters are alive and still moving around the world.” Quite the mystery, it seems! In the official trailer for the series below, Michael Scofield is heard saying, “Not all deaths are the same. Some are real. Some are a story.”
From interviews, trailers, and other material, we have an idea of what is coming in Prison Break: Resurrection. It is 7 years later and while his family and friends believe him to be dead, Michael Scofield is somehow not buried 6 feet under. It seems that he has been working for an organization (of the terrorist group variety) and because of ISIS, he is now newly tattooed and behind bars in a prison called Ogygia in Yemen, a violence-ridden country being torn apart from the inside. After being released from prison, T-Bag receives information that Michael might be alive. He brings the revelation to Lincoln, who has been getting into some trouble doing odd jobs for criminal types again, and Sara, who is raising Michael Jr. with a new husband. Following the trail of clues, Lincoln and friends (like C-Note and Sucre) set out to find Michael and break him out of prison and escape a country. And all the while, we uncover the mystery of Michael and how he came to be imprisoned once more. After 7 years, we have to wonder who Michael Scofield has become. What has he been doing and why? Is he still a good man? Or has more changed than we thought?
While we have trailers and updates on social media, providing us with information (such as what you read above), Fox is certainly living up to “event series” status with the revival series, amping up publicity for Prison Break: Resurrection through various media. For example, if you are planning on attending SXSW in Austin, TX this month, there will be a screening of the first episode of the series followed by a panel on March 12. Not only that, you can also participate in a live “escape room” experience that will be set up at the film and music interactive media event! (Seriously, escape rooms and Prison Break are a match made in heaven!)
If you can’t get to SXSW and participate in a real world escape room, you can try to solve the Instagram based digital “escape room” by following @OneLastBreak. Scofield-designed origami cranes will be presented as a path to “freedom.” Solve the puzzles and if you finish, you’ll see a reveal of a new Instagram handle featuring a message from (fictional) Michael Scofield and an exclusive scene from the show!
