By: Gwendolyn Y. McNutt, CSEP (@gmcnuttplans)

This past weekend, more than 100 celebrities, along with 15,000 Star Trek fans, converged on the Rio Suite Hotel in Las Vegas for a weekend with their favorite starship crews. The beloved original Star Trek series premiered in 1966, and has spawned television spin-offs, films, and animated series. The event is produced by Creation Entertainment and draws fans from all over the world. Now in its 16th year, the Official Star Trek Convention offers fans of all things Star Trek panel discussions, autograph signings, meet-and-greets, cosplay competitions, and a chance to buy products and collectibles.

One of the biggest highlights from this year’s convention was celebration of the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which included a reunion panel featuring the series’ cast members. Several Star Trek captains also made appearances, most notably William Shatner and Patrick Stewart. During the convention, it was also announced that LeVar Burton will be reprising his role of Geordi La Forge in the free-to-play online role playing game Star Trek Online. Star Trek Online is a sci-fi MMORPG with a full universe featuring stories from the popular television shows and movies. Players can pioneer their own destiny as Captain of a Federation starship, become a Klingon Warrior and champion the Empire through the far reaches of the galaxy, or rebuild the Romulan legacy as the commander of a Romulan Republic Warbird.

Starting next month, in a new Star Trek: The Next Generation-themed featured episode titled “Beyond the Nexus,” players will encounter Starfleet Captain Geordi La Forge, brought to life by actor LeVar Burton. They will join La Forge and his crew as they investigate a distress call from a Galaxy-class ship whose crew is being mind-controlled by a mysterious energy source. Captain La Forge’s adventures continue into Season 14 – Emergence, which will launch a PC version of Star Trek Online in October. Players will be able to interact directly with Captain La Forge and accompany him on a dangerous mission to a new colony world.
