Recently, the director of Spider-Man: Homecoming reported that the classic spider-senses experienced by Peter Parker will not be included in the film. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Jon Watts explained, “I feel like we have seen a lot of Spider Sense in the previous films, so we didn’t really lean into that as hard as they have in the previous films. But I do think it’s a really interesting thing to explore.”
This is an interesting choice for the film, since we got a preview of Parker’s spider senses in Captain America: Civil War, like when Stark randomly throws something at Peter to prove he’s lying about not being Spider-Man. However, other scenes in Civil War could suggest that he does not have his spidey senses, which is why the other Avengers so easily beat him up.
To make up for the absence of Parker’s trademark senses, it appears Stark saves the day with some pretty impressive tech to mask the loss, including a suit that form-fits itself to Parker and features his own AI system named Karen — which is being voiced by Paul Bettany’s wife Jennifer Connelly. Of course, Bettany is known for playing J.A.R.V.I.S. and, now, Vision.
Since the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield versions of Spider-Man relied heavily on exploring the acute and intensified senses Parker receives after being bitten by a nasty arachnid, it makes sense that Watts would try to move away from that theme and perhaps work more on the character’s other attributes. It might remind viewers that the film isn’t being produced solely by Sony anymore, but by Marvel as well — whether that reminder results in a stamp of approval or a scarlet letter, we’ll find out soon.
