Ron Howard Taking Over as Director of Han Solo Movie

By: Michaela Bush

After a little hiccup this week, Han Solo (or his film, rather) is back in action.

Due to a shakeup involving creative differences amongst the former directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, the pilot’s seat for the still-untitled Han Solo film has been taken over by Ron Howard. Miller and Lord’s firing was announced on Tuesday – which may or may not have caused a minor Internet meltdown – but by Thursday, the film’s reins had been handed over to Howard.

Howard has been involved in several films and TV shows such as A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, The Da Vinci Code, The Andy Griffith Show, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He also starred with Harrison Ford in George Lucas’ film American Graffiti, so he already has experience working with Lucas, not to mention Ford himself.

Kennedy released a statement on Thursday, commenting that, “At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began 40 years ago. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie.” The decision to change directors so late into production process is nearly unprecedented, but Howard is jumping right into the action, delaying filming for only a short amount of time before resuming July 10th. The film is still slated for release on May 25, 2018.

Howard tweeted, “I’m beyond grateful to add my voice to the Star Wars Universe after being a fan since 5/25/77…I hope to honor the great work already done & help deliver on the promise of a Han Solo film.”

What are your thoughts on this development? What direction do you think – or hope – Howard will take the film in?
