Getting a Glimpse: The Good Doctor

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

A 2013 South Korean drama series is getting an American adaptation on ABC, and it just might shed some light and offer some representation for those who need it. Developed for American television by David Shore (House) and Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-O), The Good Doctor is set to arrive on the network this fall!

CBS began development of The Good Doctor in May 2014 with Daniel Dae Kim producing. The network didn’t pick up the project, and it moved to Sony Pictures Television. In October 2016, ABC gave the show a put pilot commitment (meaning that the pilot is guaranteed to air whether a show is picked up for series or not, and the studio will pay hefty fines if they don’t air the pilot episode), and the pilot was officially ordered in January 2017. Executive producers David Shore, Daniel Dae Kim, David Kim, Sebastian Lee, and pilot director Seth Gordon will be bringing The Good Doctor to life on ABC, as the show was ordered to series this May.

The new show will follow a young surgical resident, Dr. Shaun Murphy, who comes from a small town and a troubled childhood. He leaves the small town life and heads to a surgical unit at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital to try to save lives and win over his new colleagues. But overcoming their skepticism might be a considerable challenge as the new talented surgeon has autism and savant syndrome. His work in the surgical unit might be the stuff of legend, but his social skills might pose an obstacle that can’t be overcome.

Freddie Highmore ends his tenure on Bates Motel to lead The Good Doctor as Dr. Shaun Murphy. He is joined by Antonia Thomas (Misfits) as Dr. Claire Brown, a talented and strong-willed doctor who forms a special bond with Shaun. Nicholas Gonzalez is set to play the residents’ supervisor Dr. Neal Melendez while Hill Harper (Limitless) will fill the role of Dr. Marcus Andrews, the head of surgery at the hospital. The rest of the cast includes Chuku Modu as resident Dr. Jared Kalu, Beau Garrett as hospital board member Jessica Preston, Irene Keng as Dr. Sarah Chen, and Richard Schiff (The West Wing) as Dr. Aaron Glassman, president of the hospital and mentor/friend to Shaun.

The Good Doctor will air on ABC on Monday nights this fall at 10/9c. You can follow the show on Facebook or Twitter . Were you moved with “the feels” by the trailer, or will you be watching something else on Monday nights this fall?
