What We Know – Kingsman: The Golden Circle

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

Move over, 007! Eggsy is here, and he’s coming to America! The Kingsman service is back at it again this year with a sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Keep reading to find out everything we know so far about the upcoming film!

In 2015, Kingsman: The Secret Service (an adaptation of the comic book by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons) premiered, and the spy comedy action (dare I say, spoof) film made a surprising $414.3 million worldwide. A sequel to the hit was announced by 20th Century Fox in April 2015. Matthew Vaughn, director of the first film, announced that he was working on the script for the sequel and it was possible he would be back to direct. (It was later confirmed that he would, indeed, be helming the second installation of the franchise.) Casting began in early 2016, with the title Kingsman: The Golden Circle made official in late March of that year. By May 2016, principal photography had begun in Birmingham with filming also occurring at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden. Filming wrapped in late 2016 and just this month a ridiculously original teaser was released. Only 15 seconds long to begin with, the teaser only contained about five seconds of actual footage, but there was quite a bit jammed into it. See it for yourself here:

If you blinked and missed it, someone has slowed the teaser down so you can catch every bit of material packed into it. The slowed down version is about 55 seconds long, and you can see it here:

Did you get all that?

A full-length trailer finally debuted last week and offers a closer look at a film that promises to be explosive, fun, and a little out-there.

Jane Goldman (who wrote the screenplay with Matthew Vaughn) has said this sequel is, “more crazy than the first one, if such a thing is possible.” Though much is still unknown, we do have a little information about the production by Adam Bohling, David Reid, and Matthew Vaughn.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle finds Eggsy (Taron Egerton), Merlin (Mark Strong), and Roxy (Sophie Cookson) on their way to America to join up with their U.S. counterpart, the Statesman, after their HQ was destroyed by Poppy. Poppy (Julianne Moore) is a criminal mastermind and member of a secret new world order called “The Golden Circle.” Eggsy and the Kingsman service aren’t alone in the fight against Poppy and her minions (like a bodyguard played by Vinnie Jones). Ginger (Halle Berry) provides tech support for the Statesman service and agents like cowboy hat-wearing Tequila (Channing Tatum), and Jack Daniels “Whiskey” (Pedro Pascal). Champagne “Champ” (Jeff Bridges) heads up the Statesman organization. (Leave it to the Americans to name all their agents after alcohol, right?)

Colin Firth as Eggsy’s mentor Harry Hart was a fan favorite from the first film, but after an apparent bullet in the face, it seemed unlikely he would return for the sequel. However, one specific promotional photo tells us that he’s back, with further confirmation coming from a shot of him at the end of the full-length trailer.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle has gone through more than one release date, much to the fans’ disappointment. First set to release in June, the date was then pushed back to October for the U.S. In what is (hopefully) the final decision, the release date for the film in the U.S. was moved up to the same time as the U.K. premiere. If all goes well, we should be seeing Kingsman and Statesman team up in theaters on September 29, 2017.

That’s what we know about the project so far. (Except for a bonus fact: Sir Elton John will be in the film too!) Are you excited for the wild and crazy ride with the spy organizations?
