Getting a Glimpse: The Tick

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

Behold, citizens! The Tick is coming to Amazon Prime this summer, and the boldly blue superhero has some new threads to amaze and astound you! Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration, but while you’re here, why not get a glimpse of the new outfit The Tick is sporting and see what’s up with the new show?

Created by Bed Edlund in 1986 as a New England Comics store mascot, The Tick eventually gained popularity and ended up with his own comic book just two years later. Edlund continued with his creation into the realm of television, and in 1994, the antennae-adorned action hero came to TV in an animated series. Edlund remained involved with The Tick when in 2001, Fox gave a live-action version of the show a shot, but it was cancelled after only nine episodes. But, like any Firefly fan knows, when a good thing is cancelled, it will live on in infamy as a cult classic. Or as a reboot… Which in this case, is exactly what has happened. With Edlund once again returning as a writer and executive producer, the first (and at the time, the only) episode of the rebooted version of The Tick premiered during Amazon’s pilot season last year. It gained popularity with the Amazon prime subscribers and beat out other pilots to win a full series order.

The pilot featured a darker, more textured costume look for The Tick (Peter Serafinowicz). However, with production finally underway for the first season of the show, a new photo surfaced with The Tick in a new suit! The overall structure of the suit changed only slightly, but the shade of blue is brighter and the suit has lost its scaly look, taking on a much smoother appearance.

The new series promises to have a Punisher parody with The Tick maintaining his expected satirical humor, but he’ll be more crazy (and more dangerous) than previous versions. However, the show doesn’t appear to be as focused on The Tick as previous iterations either. Instead, it seems to be centered on his mentally unstable accountant sidekick, Arthur (Griffin Newman) who discovers that his home city is owned by a villain (who is likely to be Jackie Earle Haley as The Terror) everyone thought was dead and six feet under. Arthur is set to try to uncover the conspiracy with his blue buddy…who may or may not be there. (The pilot implies through various references to projects like Fight Club that The Tick might not be as real as he thinks…but we’ll have to wait for the rest of the season to see how that pans out.)

The Tick will be released on Amazon Prime on August 25, 2017, new suit and all! Check out his new suit in action and find out if he’s even real, this summer!
