Getting a Glimpse: Deception

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

You’ve seen law enforcement team up with psychic detectives. You’ve seen them work with cocky writers. You’ve even seen them working with the devil himself. But have you ever seen the FBI team up with an illusionist? ABC has a new series coming this fall which plans to do exactly that. It might be crazy, or it might be a stroke of genius in the “odd-couple-team-up” genre. Here’s the 411 on ABC’s upcoming show, Deception.

Deception is set to follow world-famous magician Cameron Black (Jack Cutmore-Scott) as he scrambles to find meaning when his career falls to pieces after a scandal. In a twist of events, he ends up working with the FBI as a consultant, helping them catch criminals with his skills of deception and trickery put to the test.

Watch the first trailer for Deception for yourself here, because…who doesn’t love magic?

With a pilot order in January and a full series order finally coming through in May, the show is not to be confused with the one-season soap opera of the same name once on NBC. Deception is just one of many Greg Berlanti shows on television now (or coming soon), in what I like to call “the Berlanti TV takeover.” The show is the creation of Berlanti and Chuck’s Chris Fedak (also set to be a writer), which they will continue to executively produce with Sarah Schechter and Martin Gero, with illusionist David Kwong co-producing. With a subject matter expert on board to produce and David Nutter helming the pilot episode, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the show got a series order. Plus, I mentioned magic, right?

The show’s cast includes more than Cutmore-Scott as Black. Lenora Crichlow will be playing Dina Clark, and Prison Break’s Amaury Nolasco will fill the role of Mike Alvarez. They are joined by Justin Chon as Jordan Kwon, Laila Robins as Special Agent Deakins, and the fantastic Vinnie Jones as Gunter Gustafsen.

I can’t help but wonder if this is how wizards make a living in the Muggle world…guess we’ll just have to watch ABC this fall, and find out with Deception!
