Carrie Fisher to Appear in Star Wars Episode 9

By: Michaela Bush

In December, she may have been drowned in moonlight, strangled by her own bra, but Carrie Fisher’s legend will live on, without CGI recreation, for Episode 9 of the Star Wars franchise. Todd Fisher – Carrie’s brother – and her daughter Billie Lourd recently gave Lucasfilm the right to use recent footage of Carrie for the last movie in the newest trilogy.

“Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t,” Todd explained to the New York Daily News. “She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan – when the saber cuts him down he becomes more powerful. I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue. I’m not the only part in that equation, but I think the people deserve to have her. She’s owned by them.”

Carrie had wrapped up filming a comparatively larger role than in The Force Awakens for this December’s The Last Jedi before her death at the end of last year. Rumors about how the films would proceed without her character – which, it’s safe to say, is pretty important – exploded after her death, with a lot of people wondering if Lucasfilm would include a CGI version of Leia, but those ideas were quickly laid to rest, leaving fans wondering how her absence would be explained in Episode 9. Apparently, the archived footage is from The Last Jedi, but how it will factor into the plot for Episode 9 has yet to be seen. Director Colin Trevorrow recently finished the script draft for the movie, which is set for a 2019 release. Considering the iffy or perhaps mildly unsettling CGI recreations for Rogue One involving Tarkin and a resurrected 1970s version of the Princess, it’s good to see Disney/Lucasfilm working to find a plausible and perhaps more ethical solution to the dilemma created by Carrie’s abrupt death.

What say you? Are you happy to see that Leia will finish out this trilogy, or are you skeptical about the ability to blend older footage and newer scripts?
