When Mark Zuckerberg said he wanted to achieve AI in 2016 and, in December, achieved the creation of a butler like Tony Stark’s Jarvis, I doubt he had this plot in mind.
The sci-fi short film “Rise”, one of the last works starring Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin, will be getting a franchise. The short is, of course, about a dystopian future where man’s attempt to create AI (artificial intelligence) has gone out of control, leading to a war: man versus machine. David Karlak, the director of the short film, will also be directing the freshly-announced feature film. The film will be produced by Johnny Lin (executive producer, American Made) and Brian Oliver (producer, Hacksaw Ridge, Black Swan). There are plans to create an entire franchise from this film, not just a standalone feature.
“Brian and I are extremely excited to have an opportunity to build a film franchise based on David Karlak’s wildly popular short,” Lin commented, “I hope this is the start to a long-lasting financing and producing relationship.” Lin and Oliver plan to fully finance the film themselves.
This isn’t the first time that a short has been developed into a full-fledged film. The newer film Arrival, released at around the same time as the short “Rise”, was based off of the short story “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang, for example. It has been done before, and hopefully, the precise and visually-stunning short film “Rise” can achieve as much—or above and beyond.
Of course, since the information was just released over the weekend, no additional info has been released concerning casting, tentative release dates, plot, etc. However, it’s safe to assume that the film will expand upon the short or begin where the short left off at.
The short film is set in the year 2043, decades after AI has been achieved (interestingly enough, in 2017). The film ends on the brink of war after a sentient kills a human. If you want to check out the short film, click HERE. Are you looking forward to the film and its upcoming franchise?
