Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Has A New Trailer

By: Karen Valenzuela (@VictoriaNoir89)

Disney has released a new trailer for the fifth installment of producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

This new installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales, has a new directing team: Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. Rob Marshall, who helmed (no pun intended) the fourth film, On Stranger Tides (2011), is not returning to direct this one, thankfully. Jeff Nathanson has penned the script after Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (screenwriters for the first three films, and unfortunately the fourth one as well) had their script turned down.

Bruckheimer and crew have said this film has been heavily inspired by the tone of the first film in the franchise, The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), which starred Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow (Captain Jack Sparrow), Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann – arguably Knightley’s break-out role.

Depp is returning for this film. He was mysteriously absent from the first two teasers we saw, but plays heavily in this trailer. We even see a creepily life-like CGI version of a very young Jack Sparrow in the trailer – which means we get to see what started Jack Sparrow off on this madcap five-film journey. We also get to see why Pirates 5’s big baddie hates Jack Sparrow and pirates in general so much. It seems Jack has stolen “everything” from Armando Salazar (played by the excellent Javier Bardem), whatever that means.

Captain Jack and his allies are searching for the trident of Poseidon to stop Salazar. But we all know Jack’s not too great at keeping allies, so that will be fun.

The patches of no skin makes me think these are zombie sharks which is terrifying.

Also returning is Geoffrey Rush as legendary Captain Hector Barbossa, whose role in this film is still a mystery. Is he switching back to being a bad guy again? There’s been speculation. He is a pirate, after all. Kevin R McNally is returning as Joshamee Gibbs. Murtogg and Mullroy, the bumbling Queen’s navy duo, are back as well. And monkey!!! (Is it Barbossa’s monkey, Jack?!)

But perhaps the biggest news for those of us who obsessed over the first three films and pretend the fourth one NEVER HAPPENED, Orlando Bloom will reprise his role as Will Turner in Dead Men Tell No Tales. At the end of the third film, At World’s End, we see him take over as captain of Davy Jones’ Flying Dutchman. In this teasers we’ve seen so far, that whole “part of the crew, part of the ship” business seems to apply to him, too. That poor boy’s been at the bottom of the ocean for quite awhile by the looks of it.

More big news: awhile back, there were hints that Keira Knightley will also return to play Elizabeth Turner (Elizabeth Swann before the whole wedding in the maelstrom scene). How she will factor into things remains unclear, but it’s safe to say she’ll help her son Henry (Brenton Thwaites), who appears quite a bit in the teasers and is most likely trying to free his father Will Turner from the curse that binds him to the Dutchman.

Some new faces include Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth, an astronomer who’s been kept out of universities because she’s a woman. She is searching for the trident with a diary she’s obtained that is full of clues that might lead her to it. Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani will also be joining the ranks as a sea witch, and she looks epic in the trailer. There has even been hints that Paul McCartney might make an appearance somewhere, which…okay, then. We got Keith Richards, so why not a Beatle?

Best news yet is the franchise is going back to setting a film on water, like the first three did. Because the fourth film was mostly set on an island. Even though it was called On Stranger Tides. HUZZAH!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales hits theaters May 26, 2017, in Disney Digital 3-D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D.
