Super Bowl Trailer Rankings

By Stephanie Holland (@GGG_blog)

Super Bowl Sunday is full of American traditions. Star studded (yet weird) commercials, trash talking between friends and of course overeating. For movie studios, a new tradition has emerged. Super Bowl is the perfect day to debut the latest trailer for their anticipated blockbuster(s). Since a 30 second ad spot during this year’s game went for $3.5 million, it’s a serious risk vs reward decision. So, let’s recap all this year’s movie trailers in order of release date. Also, if you stay until the end there’s a special bonus trailer.

A Cure for Wellness – Feb. 17

This psychological thriller starring Dane DeHaan as a young executive who tries to retrieve his boss from a mysteriously creepy spa has flown under the radar. Its riding the very fine line between secretive and interesting. The trailer didn’t reveal anything new, but it also didn’t take advantage of the big stage to set itself apart from the competition.

Logan – March 3

Hugh Jackman’s final stand as Wolverine follows him as he reconnects with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and a strange young girl with familiar powers and an even more familiar bad attitude. No new, groundbreaking footage but we did glimpse a few more action spots. The best part of all the “Logan” trailers has definitely been the music. The featured tracks have been perfect in selling not only the tone but Wolverine’s emotional state.

Life – March 24

The handsome quotient is upped to maximum with Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal in this sci-fi thriller about the discovery of life on Mars. The tagline says “we were better off alone” which makes it sound like this is the usual scientists are excited to discover an alien until it starts killing them space epic.

Ghost in the Shell – March 31

Based on the extremely popular manga series, Scarlett Johansson stars as The Major. It’s the story of a woman turned cyborg trying to discover the truth of her past and identity. If that sounds too heavy don’t worry, there’s plenty of action along the way with big stunts and fights that look very cool. Unless you’re familiar with the source material a quick 30 second ad is really not going to give enough information about this one so I suggest finding a full-length trailer to get the whole story.

Fate of the Furious – April 14

“Fast and Furious” 8. That’s right I said eight. Did anyone see that coming? At this point in the franchise the plot is irrelevant, but there is one twist. Dom has betrayed the family and taken up with the evil Charlize Theron. The big reveal in this ad was the return of Jason Statham to join the crew in fighting Dom and his new partner. Producers also managed to drop in a few new action scenes featuring a submarine and of course more jokes from Tyrese. It gave fans of the franchise everything they wanted. No film did a better job of maximizing its big game spot other than…

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – May 5

The Guardians are finally back. Like all Marvel films we know absolutely nothing about the plot or how it effects the rest of the MCU. However, we did get more comedy, action and classic rock with Fleetwood Mac providing the soundtrack for the latest trailer. Despite the lack of any actual information this caused the most online buzz of any Super Bowl trailer.

Baywatch – May 26

On paper a “Baywatch” movie with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron does not sound like it should work, but somehow it does. While this trailer also delivered no new footage (except for Efron in a USA speedo) it did a great job of letting moviegoers know exactly what they were getting. That’s a somewhat rare quality among today’s vague movie ads. Plus, it looks really funny.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales – May 26

What happens when you have an entire commercial for a new “Pirates of the Caribbean” and almost no Johnny Depp? Interest is low and people don’t really talk about it for the rest of the night. Disney is trying to keep the plot under wraps so the trailer gave nothing away. There was the usual pirate action and crazy creatures but this being the fifth one all of that is expected.

Transformers: The Last Knights – June 26

So “Transformers 5.” Robots fight across Earth and Mark Wahlberg is there. Nothing new to see here, move along.

And now a bonus surprise trailer!

Stranger Things – Halloween

Yes, the surprise TV obsession of 2016 is back for season two, but not until Halloween. The Netflix hit didn’t reveal anything in its first ad but it was just enough to work die-hard fans into a frenzy on social media and remind potential fans that it was time to start binging.

Television time constraints forced all the ads to last from 30 seconds to one minute. Many have extended cuts posted online and I suggest viewing those to get the full effect.

Which movie are you most excited for and did any of the big game trailers change your mind about seeing it? Let me know in the comments.
