WWE Royal Rumble 2017 Recap

By Stephanie Holland

For WWE fans two minutes is all it takes to change the course of history. Two minutes is all it takes for John Cena to make a triumphant return from injury, AJ Styles to make the most surprising debut in WWE history or for Shawn Michaels to become a legend.

Two minutes is the amount of time between entrants in the annual Royal Rumble match. This year’s event took place in front of 52,020 hyped fans in San Antonio’s AlamoDome. It starts with two men in the ring, then every two minutes a new wrestler shows up. Elimination happens when someone is thrown over the top rope with both feet hitting the floor. This provides a lot of entertaining, acrobatic moments. Just Google “Kofi Kingston Royal Rumble” and you’ll see what I mean.

This year’s match has been advertised as the biggest ever since it featured legends like The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, Goldberg and popular stars The New Day, Dolph Ziggler, Randy Orton and Dean Ambrose..

As usual the winner gets to main event Wrestlemania in a championship match. This means it’s everyone for themselves. There are no friends or teams in the Royal Rumble. It’s the “Highlander” of wrestling, “there can be only one.” Though everyone is waiting for the rumble to start, there are other matches on the card.

Second generation superstar Charlotte Flair continued her pay per view undefeated streak by retaining the RAW Women’s Championship against the hugely popular Bayley.

Universal Champion Kevin Owens defeated Roman Reigns in a brutal no disqualification match. A new stipulation featured Owens’ best friend Chris Jericho suspended above the ring in a shark cage to prevent him from interfering.

Tables, chairs, brass knuckles, everything came into play. Unfortunately for Reigns, RAW’s resident unbeatable giant Braun Strowman attacked him just as he was setting up his finisher and Owens was able to steal a victory.

Crossover star John Cena defeated AJ Styles to win his 16th world championship. This ties him with Hall of Famer Ric Flair for the most world titles ever.

Last time these two clashed it was an instant classic that many fans called the match of the year. We all assumed they couldn’t top that one. We were wrong.

This was without a doubt the match of the night. Yes they stole the show from the Royal Rumble at the Royal Rumble. That never happens.

After taking each other’s best shots Cena was able to counter a Phenomenal Forearm into his finisher the Attitude Adjustment, roll through while carrying Styles and hit him with a second one. Cena gets the pin and a spot in the history books.

The actual Royal Rumble match itself was a fairly straightforward affair. The big surprise this year was the complete lack of surprises. No returning legends, no stunning debuts, no one coming back from injury. All of these are rumble mainstays and none of them happened. The closest we got was NXT superstar Tye Dillinger showing up at No. 10, which really wasn’t shocking since his gimmick revolves around him being the “Perfect 10.”

After weeks of hyping another clash between Brock Lesnar and Goldberg, when they finally met in the ring this one ended just as quick as the first time with Goldberg eliminating Lesnar in short order. Other highlights included the implosion of the Wyatt Family, a big push for up and comer Baron Corbin and Kofi Kingston once again using crazy acrobatics to avoid elimination.

So it all came down to Roman Reigns, who unexpectedly entered at 30 considering all the punishment he took earlier in the evening, and Randy Orton. Orton is the master of the RKO Outta Nowhere (seriously You Tube Randy Orton’s best RKOs) so once he hit that on Reigns it was over. Randy wins, gets to headline Wrestlemania, possibly against John Cena and the fans got a winner they could cheer.

While this Rumble didn’t provide the excitement of past classics, it did set up several intriguing storylines heading into Wrestlemania season.
