Newest Hidden Figures Trailer Shows Real-Life Womens’ Significance in the Space Race

By: Haylee Fisher (@haylee_fisher)

Katherine Johnson. Dorothy Vaughan. Mary Jackson.

Do these names mean anything to you?

Maybe not right now, but they will after seeing the upcoming film Hidden Figures.

Hidden Figures focuses on three real-life African-American women who were key players in providing the mathematical data needed for the space program’s first successful missions. It was a man’s world back then, and in many instances still is, but these women helped break those barriers and prove their contributions were significant, and even vital, to the world of the 50s and 60s and even pave the way for today’s women in STEM.

The film stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, a physicist, scientist, and mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for Project Mercury and Apollo 11. Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae play Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, respectively, who were also instrumental in the mission in which John Glenn became the first American astronaut to completely orbit the Earth.

Hidden Figures hits theaters select theaters Christmas Day and goes wide January 13, 2017. Check out the newest trailer below.
