The galaxy of Star Wars anthologies planned by Disney may be expanding a bit pretty soon.
Rumors have been swirling for years about a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff film. Mostly, these rumors have been shot down, but for once, it appears Lucasfilm may be preparing to bring this film into reality. While many fans have been waiting anxiously for an Obi-Wan film for quite some time, others may be dismayed to hear of the potential spinoff, which is one of many.
Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Crown) is in early talks to direct the potential Obi-Wan solo film…and that’s pretty much all we know as of yet. Lucasfilm and Disney have yet to publicly announce neither the film, nor their plans for it. Naturally, we have yet to hear anything about a plot, title, or even casting, as the film is in the very early stages of creation. The only thing for certain is that Stephen Daldry is currently being vetted as a potential director for the film.
We’ve already seen Obi-Wan train Anakin and Luke Skywalker, between the trilogy and prequel; certainly there is enough material between those time periods — and even more before the prequel! — to create a Kenobi-centric film. Since Disney’s purchase of the rights to the Star Wars franchise, they’ve planned for several anthological films including both well-loved and lesser-known characters from the main trilogies.
Ewan McGregor, who played the character in the prequel trilogy, has oft stated that he would be pleased to jump back into the franchise if requested, and he’s still been working with Disney — since he recently appeared in Beauty and the Beast as the human version of Lumiere and is also working alongside several other familiar faces to bring a recently-announced film, Christopher Robin, to life as well.
What are your thoughts? What scene, piece of Star Wars history, or anthology story would you want to see the most in an Obi-Wan spinoff film?
