What We Know: Wind River

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

Taylor Sheridan wrote the screenplay for the critically acclaimed Sicario. Now, he’s trying his hand at directing a feature film set in wintry Wyoming. Find out everything we know so far about his upcoming movie, Wind River, right here!

Sitting in the director’s chair only once before, Sheridan makes his way into the realm of feature films directing Wind River, which he penned personally. Produced by Elizabeth A. Bell, Peter Berg, Matthew George, Basil Iwanyk, and Wayne Rogers, the film began its casting process in 2015. May 2015 brought the announcement of Star Trek’s Chris Pine and Avengers’ Elizabeth Olsen to star. In January 2016, Pine dropped out of the project and was replaced by another Avengers alumni, Jeremy Renner. By March 2016, filming began in Utah with Renner, Olsen, and the rest of the cast, with distribution rights for the film acquired by The Weinstein Company in May of the same year.

The suspense thriller film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and has made its way to the Cannes Film Festival as well. But the modern-day western film isn’t in the theaters just yet, as it will be hitting the big screens in August. If you haven’t been to a film festival to check out the project yet, check out the trailer and see what you think!

Wind River is the procedural crime drama you didn’t know had a place in the movies anymore. (There’s enough Law and Order and CSI television shows to keep viewers occupied on that front.) But the film, with an 111-minute run time, promises to provide all the clue-hunting satisfaction you would ever want, backed by a soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert (Renner) has a tragic past involving his daughter which he continues to deal with alongside ex-wife, Wilma (Julia Jones), and son, Casey (Teo Briones). Cory works on the Wind River Native American Reservation (welcomed by the community or not), in this case hunting a predators causing trouble for local ranchers. When he finds the body of a teenage girl with evidence of sexual assault in the Wyoming wilderness, his job expands into new realms. In the search for answers and justice for the dead girl’s parents (played by Gil Birmingham and Tantoo Cardinal), Las Vegas-based rookie FBI agent Jane Banner (Olsen) is sent to Wind River to investigate. Clearly not prepared to deal with the deep Wyoming winter and the world of violence surrounding the crime, Jane enlists the help of Cory to get to the bottom of things. Do they make headway or find themselves victims? You’ll have to hit the theaters yourself to find out!

Supporting cast for Wind River includes Jon Bernthal (Daredevil), Kelsey Chow, Graham Greene, James Jordan, Eric Lange, Ian Bohen (Teen Wolf), Hugh Dillon, and Matthew Del Negro.

A safe bet for movie ticket spending, Wind River appears to be a solid project worth the watch. It already has an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 73% score from Metacritic, and a 7.4/10 from IMDb. Wind River is slated to be released in theaters August 4, 2017.
