There has recently been quite a bit of confusion concerning Sony Pictures’ decision to create a Venom film that’s separate from the new Spider-Man: Homecoming film, especially considering the close ties between the characters. There was also a bit of confusion as fans wondered if Spider-Man: Homecoming would include the first Venom host, but Homecoming director Jon Watts recently put this to rest as well, stating that Venom would not be making an appearance in the first solo film featuring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Next, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, recently put to rest any rumors of Venom appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“For now, there is no plan for Venom in the MCU. It’s a Sony project,” Feige stated in an interview with AlloCine on Wednesday.
Sony still maintains rights for Venom’s character, and is currently planning an R-rated Venom film starring Tom Hardy, directed by Ruben Fleischer. This film is going to start off Sony’s own Marvel Universe, which will be filled with characters that Marvel Studios no longer owns. While Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are working together on the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming film, it does not appear that they will continue expanding their deal to other Sony-owned characters. Sony also plans to create additional Spider-Man films on their own, without Marvel Studios’ involvement.
Granted their ownership rights, Sony could certainly take the Venom storyline and run with it for now, but will the Sony/Marvel relationship get further confused (especially for fans) if Tom Holland’s character ends up in a solo-movie trilogy (like Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, etc.) and Sony’s also making Spider-Man films, presumably to maintain continuity with Venom’s own storyline? What do you think about Venom’s exclusion from the MCU, and how do you think the movies will play out (on both Marvel’s and Sony’s parts)?
Venom is set for a 2018 release, and is being written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, with Scorpion Computer Services founder Walter O’Brien as the technical advisor. Spider-Man: Homecoming is hitting theaters July 7, 2017, just three weeks from now.
