20th Century Fox Partners with Jane Goodall Institute on Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Honor of War for the Planet of the Apes

There is no one more noted for their compassion and drive for the conservation of chimpanzees than Jane Goodall. Her work has been well documented over her almost 60-year career and she even established the Jane Goodall Institute in 1970 to further advocate for chimps and archive data related to their protection.

Now, 20th Century Fox has partnered with the Jane Goodall Institute to provide care for rescued chimpanzees, many of whom are victims of the illegal commercial bushmeat and pet trades.

The rescued chimps live on three forested island sites and a mainland sanctuary site at the Institute’s Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in Republic of Congo. The sites give the animals a chance to live in an environment that mimics the kind of habitat from which they were stolen, and also offers them the chance to build their own communities as they do in the wild and as the apes in War for the Planet of the Apes do as well. This collaboration will benefit the nearly 150 chimpanzees housed at the site.



Additionally, the institute has named the largest island site after Caesar, the Planet of the Apes franchise’s hero chimpanzee, as a thank you to 20th Century Fox.

In a statement announcing the team-up, Goodall said, “I think that the Planet of the Apes series makes people think about the apes and perhaps our relationship to them. And anything that makes us think about our own humanity in relation to the rest of the animal kingdom is important. So I think the series has helped.”

The film’s director Matt Reeves reiterated Goodall’s thoughts and expressed his gratitude to the Jane Goodall Institute for the tireless work they do in rehabilitating these animals.

“It is an honor and a privilege to partner with the Jane Goodall Institute in providing needed care for our closest living animal relatives,” Reeves said. “Over the course of filming Caesar’s cinematic journey, it’s fascinated me to learn so much about apes and chimpanzees, these amazing sentient animals who organize, strategize, and even socialize in much the same way as humans. Our hope is this reimagined Apes franchise will spark a fresh awareness, compassion, and respect for these majestic species for generations to come.”

A new promo has also been released and while it does offer glimpses at a few new scenes from War for the Planet of the Apes, it more concentrates on the admirable work provided by the Jane Goodall Institute.



War for the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters July 14, 2017.
