What We Know: The Hitman’s Bodyguard

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

What is the world coming to when even the best hitmen can’t walk the streets in safety, thus requiring the services of a bodyguard? Oh, the humanity! When will the madness end?! Lionsgate Films brings the shocking story to light with a new film coming this August, and you can find out everything we know about it, right here!

Snarky Ryan Reynolds and delightfully foul-mouthed Samuel L. Jackson team up for the ultimate buddy team action comedy this summer in The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Directed by Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3) and written by Tom O’Connor (Fire with Fire), The Hitman’s Bodyguard promises to be the exciting summer flick you didn’t even know you needed!

In May 2011, David Ellison’s Skydance Media got the script for the film. The screenplay was good enough to end up on the year’s Black List of unproduced scripts. (The Black List is actually not a bad thing and has, in some cases, helped to catapult fresh scripts into production.) In November 2014, the project put out some casting announcements and Jeff Wadlow was slated to helm the project. In February 2016, casting continued with the following month heralding Widlow’s departure from the film and the entrance of Patrick Hughes to direct. Principal photography finally kicked off in April 2016, with filming taking place in London, Amsterdam, and Sofia.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard is produced by Ellison, Mark Gill, Dana Goldberg, Matthew O’Toole (London Has Fallen), John Thompson (Rambo), and Les Weldon (Conan the Barbarian). It is set to star Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), as Michael Bryce, one of the world’s top protection agents; Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) as professional hitman Darius Kincaid; and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), as an Eastern European dictator named Vladislav Dukhovich. They are joined by Élodie Yung (Daredevil) as Interpol agent Amelia Ryder; Salma Hayek as the hitman’s wife, Sonia Kincaid; Joaquim de Almeida; Kirsty Mitchell; Sam Hazeldine; and Richard E. Grant.

Hitmen and bodyguards typically find themselves opposing one another, but in this exciting upcoming movie, the tables have turned. Kincaid has agreed to step forward and testify at the International Court of Justice in order to get his equally notorious wife out of prison. He has 24 hours to get from England to The Hague, but killer dictator Dukhovich will do anything he can to stop that from happening. Enter Bryce, who must now protect the life of a man he would normally be defending others from. But just because he’s got the job doesn’t mean he has to like it! The Hitman’s Bodyguard promises to be explosive fun with lots of sass and a bit of sailor’s mouth, and a 111 minute run time doesn’t sound like enough! See the trailer yourself for a good look at what to expect when the film is released this August! (Fair warning: The trailer has more curse words than many whole movies have.)

Poking fun at Whitney Houston’s and Kevin Costner’s The Bodyguard is just the tip of the outlandish iceberg. The movie poster also spoofs the classic chick flick. Promotional material on the movie’s official Twitter page have even managed to play off the Fyre music festival debacle with almost enough sarcasm to make Deadpool himself proud. With some summer months between now and the film’s release, there’s sure to be plenty of opportunities for more kooky promos, which will have to tide us all over until the movie is out!

Clearly, The Hitman’s Bodyguard will be an R-rated film. The language alone is plenty of reason. But it will definitely still have an audience. Hayek, has even stated, “This film is so magnificent that I am going to have the courage to predict that there will be a sequel.” When shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this March, the film screening was positively received, with Jackson reportedly getting the most laughs!

The Hitman’s Bodyguard is slated for release in the U.S. and U.K. on August 18, 2017. It’s the wacky action movie you didn’t know you wanted, but by this point should be topping the list of movies you need!
