Rumor to Reality – Psych: The Movie

By: Jaclyn Cascio (@jaclynator)

Get ready, Psych-Os! Your socks are about to be sucked off! Your favorite psychic detective and team are coming back to USA Network this December for a holiday special!

Fans of the eight-season show Psych have always wanted more shenanigans from the dynamic duo of Shawn and Gus and the Santa Barbara police department. The show ended in 2014 after more than 120 episodes (including a musical movie event), and it looks like the fans’ dreams are finally coming true! In a television and movie era where fan favorites are making a comeback, it seems only fitting that Psych should also make a return. In 2015, series star James Roday said about a possible revisiting of the series, “I think it’s mostly a matter of timing, schedules, and money – which is kind of what it always is. There is certainly no resistance to the idea. It’s just a matter of finding that sweet spot where they have been gone long enough, but not too long. Where the interest is still there and the fans still want it and you really want to strike at the perfect time. I think that is what most of the discussions have been about.” It looks like the stars have aligned and the sweet spot has been found in 2017!

Rumors have flown about a possible film for some time, peaking in March and April of this year. The activity of the Psych Writer’s Room Twitter increased significantly in the last couple of months, and fans were quick to pick up on comments by Cary Elwes at a panel when he was asked about the identity of his character, Pierre Despereaux. Elwes stated, “It’s a good question, and I believe it will all be revealed in the film that we’re making this summer. We’re all reuniting in July to make some organized chaos.” With Elwes the only cast member outright speaking on the topic of a movie, fans were still cautious. Their hopes were raised further when a film titled Psych appeared on the Production Weekly list in April with a projected production start date of May 23.

Last week, rumors finally became reality, as Psych: The Movie was officially announced! A two-hour holiday event, the TV movie will bring back the original cast and creator to revive the magic once more! Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer of NBCUniversal and president of Universal Cable Productions said, “Psych has an absolutely phenomenal and constantly refreshing fan base. We couldn’t be more thrilled to gift our Psych-Os this holiday season…” That gift is set for shooting in Vancouver and San Francisco on May 24.

Chris McCumber, president of Entertainment Networks for NBC Universal Cable Entertainment said, “Psych is a beloved part of our USA family, and what better time to reunite with family than the holidays?” In the gift that keeps on giving, McCumber added, “Steve [Franks] and James [Roday] have taken the unique brand of comedy that the series honed over eight seasons and packed it into a two-hour movie that successfully rekindles one of the greatest bromances in television history.” Like the days of old, Franks will direct the television movie with a script co-written with Roday. The two also executively produce along with other series lead, Dulé Hill, and Tagline Pictures’ Chris Henze and Kelly Kulchak.

The movie is set to bring back Detectives Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson) along with Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) with tomfoolery experts Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulè Hill) and strict father, Henry (Corbin Bernsen). With comments by Elwes about the film reunion, it’s likely we will see him reprise his role as Despereaux. Psych: The Movie will check in with the crazy kids’ lives three years after the events of the series finale. A mystery assailant targets one of their own and everyone must work together to solve the mystery, find the trouble-maker, and maybe eat some delicious food along the way!

Remember, Psych: The Movie will be coming to USA Network December 2017. Don’t be a gooey chocolate chip cookie! Brush up on your obscure 80s references, slice up some pineapple, and wait for iiiiiiiit…!
