Tangled The Series Review: Cassandra vs. Eugene

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s get ready to ruuuuuummmbbllleeee!

In this corner, it’s the Lady-in-Warring, the Maiden of Mayhem, a woman so cold she should actually be in Frozen… CASSANDRAAAAAAA!!

And in the opposite corner, it’s the Smoldering Scoundrel, the Devilish Dodger, the Princess’s Pulchritudinous Partner…. EUGENE FITZHERBERT!!

Who will be the champion in the battle that everyone’s been waiting for? Let’s find out!

*rings bell*

The Episode

Rapunzel has had ENOUGH, you guys.  Eugene and Cassandra’s bickering has finally gotten out of hand, and our princess decides to take matters into her own hands.

She creates a sort of scavenger hunt that the two of them can only solve together, and locks them in a cell in the dungeon together.  Unfortunately, she puts them in a dungeon above the ol’ Stabbington brothers– remember them, from the movie?  And they’re still holding a grudge against their old partner, Flynn Rider.

While Eugene and Cassandra have a nice sharing-is-caring moment together and actually solve part of Rapunzel’s scavenger hunt, ultimately, they’re unable to work together to get out of the cell.  The Stabbingtons use their failure to escape their own cell and take them hostage.  The Royal Guards, including the Captain, give chase, but the brothers threaten Cassandra in order to get away.  They flee through the tunnels under the castle, eventually deciding that they don’t really need Eugene as leverage and planning to kill him.

Thankfully, Eugene and Cassandra are able to work together to defeat the brothers, while Rapunzel– remembering the secret paths from her escape from the kingdom– rescues them from the collapsed tunnel.  The Stabbington Brothers are apprehended by the guards, and Eugene and Cassandra seemed to have finally reached an agreeable compromise.

… well, for now, anyway.

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • I appreciate the show’s use of word “halberd”, but I will dearly miss calling them “those axe-y weapon things”.
  • The amount of “HOW DID I GET ROPED INTO BEING RAPUNZEL’S MESSENGER PIGEON” on Pascal’s face:

  • I mean, Rapunzel’s got a decent evil laugh.  Like… a creepily decent evil laugh.  Then again, she did spend most of her life living with Mother Gothel.
  • RAPUNZEL, PLEASE STOP BEING SO ADORABLE, I CAN’T TAKE IT:

  • Eugene totally goes full Flynn around Cassandra, does he not? He was such a little sh–um, SNOT in this episode…
  • Until he had honesty hour with Cassandra, which was quite sweet.  C’mon, Cassandra! He’s a pain in the butt, but he means well. And CLEARLY, you could use a nice chat with someone who understands your birth-parent issues, at least to a certain degree.
  • Which brings us to the big reveal of this episode: Cassandra’s adopted! Part of me wants to be like, “Okay, are they gonna make Gothel her birth mom because they look vaguely similar and have a tendency to grouch?” But another part of me is like, “CAN THEY MAKE CASSANDRA EUGENE’S SISTER BECAUSE I THINK I WOULD SCREAM FOR FIVE YEARS?” And then the last part is like, “Maybe she doesn’t have to have parents related to the story at all and that’s okay!”  What do you think, guys?
  • “‘Don’t have time for dreams’? Honey, you are hanging out with the WRONG princess!” *praise hands emoji*
  • Eugene talking about dreaming that his parents would “come back and get him” HURT MY HEART, okay?  God help us all if we ever get a flashback to tiny Eugene.  GOD. HELP. US. ALL.
  • WHO THE EFF IS FRIDEBORG? WHERE DID SHE COME FROM? WHAT IS HER DEAL?  I MUST KNOW MORE (I AM LAUGHING SO HARD, WHAT IS EVEN HAPPENING WITH THIS CHARACTER?!)

LIKE IS SHE ALL RIGHT??!  (The random characters on this show make my entire life, I swear.)

(No, that wasn’t said in the episode. It just reminded me of Rogue One and I’m obsessed with that movie in a probably unhealthy manner.  Look, it’s MY recap, AND I CAN DO WHAT I WANT, OKAY?)

  • Uh, WHERE was Maximus in this episode? He would’ve totally taken care of the Stabbingtons in like, .5 seconds. *waves Maximus flag*
  • I loved Rapunzel’s attempt to comfort Eugene about her dad’s reaction about the vase when he LITERALLY IMPOSED MARTIAL LAW the last time he got pissed at her.  Blondie, your dad is the KING of overreactions.  Eugene’s got good reason to be scared!

That’s it for this week’s recap!  Let us know what you thought of the episode in the comments below.  See you next week!
