Bringing his stylized flair to another classic story, Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) will bring Arthur and Excalibur to life this May with the Warner Bros. upcoming film, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Check out what we know so far about the project!
In January 2014, Warner Bros. put Guy Ritchie in the director’s chair for what is meant to be the first of six films planned. This is not Ritchie’s first foray into period pieces, as he successfully directed a swanky new take on Sherlock Holmes. Originally titled Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, casting began in 2014 and continued into 2015. Filming began in February 2015 at Windsor Great Park and continued in Wales, the Scottish Highlands, and Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden. Originally planned for release in July 2016, the date was pushed to February 2017, then to March 2017, before finally hitting the current release date of May 12, 2017. The first trailer was released at San Diego Comic Con in July 2016, where the new title was also announced. Produced by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell (Awake), with Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek Discovery, Transformers: The Last Knight), and Guy Ritchie, Steve Clark-Hall, and Lionel Wigram (all from Sherlock Holmes), the story by Joby Harold and David Dobkin (The Judge) takes us back to Arthur’s roots. An origin story, the screenplay by Joby Harold, Guy Ritchie, and Lionel Wigram follows Arthur, a street-wise kid raised in a brothel who learned from the school of hard-knocks in Londinium. He has no idea he comes from royal lineage, but the truth will be revealed in time. The truth is that he is destined lead the kingdom, but his uncle Vortigern murdered Arthur’s parents and took the crown for himself when Arthur was just a child. When Arthur draws Excalibur from the stone, it becomes clear that he is worthy, but perhaps still a bit of a rogue, as Ritchie promises that Arthur will be a little “naughty.” (Who doesn’t love a bad boy fighting for the kingdom, right?) In Arthur’s world, magic is real, (as well as gigantic elephants) and the sword carries an influence all its own. Arthur must learn to master the weapon and his inner demons and place his allegiance with a resistance against the tyrant, King Vortigern (who has some terrifying magic of his own).
The titular Arthur will be played by Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) with Jude Law filling the villainous role of Vortigern. Arthur has some allies in Bedivere (Djimon Hounsou), Goosefat Bill (Aiden Gillen), and Maid Maggie (Annabelle Wallis). Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) was originally slotted in the role of Guinevere, but recent changes show her in the role of The Mage. (Could they be one and the same?) Meanwhile, Arthur’s father Uther Pendragon is played by Eric Bana (Star Trek) and David Beckham (yes, that one) will be Blackleg Leader, a disgruntled knight who is unsuccessful in his attempt to retrieve the mythical Excalibur from the stone.
Other cast includes Miakel Persbrandt as Kjartan, Lorraine Bruce as Syrena, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Wetstick, Javan Hirst as Borin, Millie Brady as Princess Catia, Thomas Metcalfe as a supporting mage, Michael McElhatton as Jack’s Eye, Katie McGrath as Elsa, and Kamil Lemieszewski as Merlin.
Rated PG-13, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword has a 2hr. 6min. run time and will premiere in theaters on May 12, 2017. Be sure to follow the film’s official Twitter account (@kingarthurmovie) for any last minute updates before the release!
