Everything We Know About the Joss Whedon-Directed ‘Batgirl’ Film

By Michaela Bush

Looks like Joss Whedon is diving back into the comic book universe… just not the one we’re used to seeing him in. It was reported last week that Whedon is closing a deal to produce, direct, and write a still-untitled Batgirl movie for the DCEU.

It appears that DC is seizing what some Marvel fans have been requesting for Black Widow—female-superhero-centric movies. In addition to a Batgirl-centered movie, we’re getting a Wonder Woman film in a couple of months, and they’re also developing a “Suicide Squad” spinoff titled “Gotham City Sirens”, which focuses on Harley Quinn and, if it follows the comic series, may include Poison Ivy and Catwoman as well. Batgirl’s comics debuted in 1967, and her comics have been increasing in popularity as of late. Her first comic appearance was in “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!” and she is the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon. Her name is Barbara Gordon, but the first mention of the Batgirl character came in Batman #139 as Betty Kane, niece of Kathy Kane (Batwoman). It’s possible that Whedon’s film may draw from the “New 52” comic series’ version of Barbara Gordon.

Whedon backed out of the MCU last year, especially after an apparently tedious journey with “Avengers: Age of Ultron”. Since then, he hasn’t worked on any films, but is currently listed on IMDb as a director and writer for an untitled “WWII Horror Project” announced in October 2016. With a resume chock-full of awesomeness like “Firefly”, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, and two “Avengers” films, there’s no doubt that Whedon will bring Batgirl to life in a fantastic way.

“I don’t even know if that deal is done or not—I don’t have the inside scoop on that. But if it is done, then I’m excited about it. I think it’s super exciting. The tone of Joss’ work is great for female superheroes. He takes such a fun approach and I think he’ll have fun in the DC universe, which will be excited to have him.” Patty Jenkins, director of “Wonder Woman”, commented.

Is anyone looking forward to this Joss-Whedon led Batgirl film?
