Where Does Peter Parker Go After Spider-Man: Homecoming?

By: Michaela Bush

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is swinging into theaters in just a few months, but will his role end prematurely?

It’s fairly well-known that Peter Parker was sort of held hostage by Sony for a long time before coming home to Marvel Studios. However, Marvel doesn’t have total control over the rights for his character anymore. Sony still has a few fingers twisted up in the making of Homecoming, and they’ve already set a July 2019 release for the sequel. However, according to an interview conducted by CosmicBookNews at CinemaCon with former Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal, the sequel may very well be the end of Spider-Man’s lifespan in the MCU.

“One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don’t have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often,” she said. “In fact, it may never happen again after we do the sequel. Because Sony, and Disney, and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film…there are only so many stories that you can tell again and again and again about Spidey, and this is something that we would have never been able to do in any other way. So it was a very selfless thing…” Of course, Pascal will not be involved in the final Sony/Disney/Marvel decision since her role at Sony ended after the email hack of 2015.

Nobody really knows what will happen after Marvel and Sony’s contract runs out after the sequel. However, what will happen after Spider-Man: Homecoming and its sequel is wildly successful? (Yes, I’m saying when, not if.) Collider – who made the CosmicBookNews interview with Pascal possible – suggests that Sony might want to withdraw from the contract and take Spider-Man (and Holland) with them to continue making movies on their own, reaping monetary benefits. Conversely, there is, of course, a chance that Sony and Marvel will continue to play nice, renew contracts, and continue working on fresh installments for Holland’s Spidey. Goodness knows there are a handful of comic series out there to incorporate stories that have not yet been explored in a movie format.

What do you make of this news? What are some Spider-Man storylines you’d like to see in the MCU? Finally…who totally freaked out when they watched the “Homecoming” trailer?
