What We Know About Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man came back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fold with Captain America: Civil War, and the response from fans was generally positive. The MCU isn’t finished with the young New York web-slinger just yet. He will continue fighting the good fight in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming this July. Here’s what we know about the project!
 
Back in February 2015, Marvel and Sony finally came to an agreement to share the character, Spider-Man. It looks like Marvel has taken over creative control of telling stories on screen using Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Sony will handle the business side of things. After reaching the agreement, the extensive casting process began in June 2015. By April 2016, the title for the upcoming film was revealed as Spider-Man: Homecoming. (And yes, it is partly about that high school dance… and also partly a nod to the wall-crawler coming back home to Marvel.) Directed by Jon Watts (Cop Cars, Clown), the movie began principal photography at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Georgia (and other Atlanta locations) in June 2016. Some other shooting continued in New York City and Berlin, with filming wrapped up in October of the same year.
 
The screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming was written by Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and director Jon Watts, along with Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley (who both missed out on the director’s chair but found another way to be involved in the project). The writers begin the story after the events of Civil War. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is back in New York, trying to balance his life as a 15 year old high school student and his responsibilities as a superhero fighting crime. Gone are the days of the origin story for Spidey. (Let’s be honest, that’s a smart move by Marvel, because most people know how that went down and don’t need a refresher.) While other Spider-Man movies may have introduced Peter Parker as a high school student when he got his powers, the truth is that he never stayed in high school for long. But Marvel plans to remind us that there are stories to be told with the young Spidey, figuring out how to live with Aunt May as a regular teenager with homework and crushes and hide the not-so-regular life of a masked crime fighter. Spider-Man: Homecoming has been described as a Jon Hughes-inspired “coming of age” story. But even while trying to find balance, Peter Parker wants to prove himself. After fighting with the Avengers, what else would happen, honestly? And with Vulture (and Tinkerer and Shocker) coming into the picture, the chance Peter hopes for might present itself before he’s ready. Speaking of Spidey, high school, and villains, Spider-Man: Homecoming has gathered a diverse cast to tell the Peter-Parker centered story. Youthful Tom Holland plays the snarky Spider-Man / Peter Parker. He is joined at the high school by Zendaya as classmate Michelle, and Jacob Batalon as best friend Ned Leeds. Laura Harrier will be Liz Allen, classmate and love interest of the intrepid hero, while Tony Revolori is adolescent rival Flash Thompson. We’ll also see Kenneth Choi as Principal Mota and talent like Hannibal Burress and Selenis Leyva as teachers.
 
Michael Keaton, once known to glide around Gotham fighting crime as Batman has decided to fly again for Spider-Man: Homecoming, as the villain Vulture. He is joined by Bokeem Woodbine as Shocker and Michael Chernus as Tinkerer. Logan Marshall-Green is also believed to be an undisclosed villain. (Boy, it sounds like Spider-Man is going to have his hands full in NYC!)
 
In addition, Marisa Tomei will return as Aunt May and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man will come back as a mentor for Holland’s Peter Parker. Happy Hogan, played by Marvel’s own Jon Favreau will be back for the film. Other names such as Donald Glover, Tyne Daley, Martin Starr, and Michael Mondo are attached to the film, although it seems their roles are still undisclosed at this time.
 
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released in 3D, IMAX, and IMAX 3D in U.S. theaters July 7, 2017 as one of three MCU releases this year. And a sequel is already scheduled for July 5, 2019! Add those to your calendar of awesome Marvel movies coming soon (ish)!
