After having her story told in Hidden Figures and earning thunderous applause at this year’s Academy Awards, Katherine Johnson is about to receive another honor: her very own Lego.
Hidden Figures shed light on the contributions made by Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, mathematicians and scientists during the 1960s at NASA, and whose significance was largely unknown until the film’s release. The upcoming Lego playset seeks to honor additional inspirational and instrumental NASA women, largely “hidden figures” themselves.
Including Johnson, those portrayed in the set are:
• Sally Ride, NASA’s first female astronaut to go into space
• computer scientist Margaret Hamilton, who led the development of the on-board flight software for the Apollo missions to the moon
• astronomer and first female NASA executive Nancy Grace Roman, considered by many to be the “Mother of the Hubble” telescope for her role she played in its development
• Mae Jemison, an engineer, physician, and the first African-American woman in space
Science editor and writer Maia Weinstock pitched the idea and designed the Women in NASA playset for the Lego Ideas platform, not unlike the process of a previous Lego collection of female scientists. On her submission page, she wrote that she wanted to honor the women of NASA because “in many cases, their contributions are unknown or under-appreciated.” Her idea won the competition and as such, will be made into actual Legos that will be available in late 2017 or early 2018.
Check out a few Weinstock-created models below and let us know if you will be purchasing this playset!
