Why We Love The Librarians

The Librarians is not your average fantasy television show. It is an immersive experience that makes you look at the world through fresh eyes by breathing new life into familiar legends, fairy tales, and fables. While many Sunday night programs simply provide an escape before the Monday grind, I find my enthusiasm to experience the world is reinvigorated in more ways than one.
 

Magic is Realistic

Elements of science, mythology, and history are deftly woven into the fabric of the narrative, blurring the lines of fact and fantasy. These bits and pieces of culture lend a sense of realism that makes it easy to start believing in magic. The show is fantastical in nature, but has a very logical and believable structural theory for magical practice. Magic is mystical, mathematic, and methodic. That being said, it is not used as a crutch to further the storyline. Just because they have a wealth of magical artifacts and infinite knowledge at their fingertips doesn’t mean that everything has a perfect solution – or that all things can or need to be fixed by magic. Magic does often play a prominent role in many battles, but ultimately the mind is the most indispensable instrument of heroism.
 

Individuality is Celebrated

The heart and soul of the show lies in its dynamic and diversely talented cast of characters. The mind of a librarian is a weapon, tool, and library all wrapped into one. At the core, our heroes are creative thinkers and problem solvers. It’s a refreshing perspective that quite frankly, makes you feel like you can do anything if you just put your mind to it. Hardly carbon copies of one another, every member of the library staff has their own strength of mind that is welcomed – a unique and priceless trove of innovative thought. Our beloved librarians are unapologetically passionate about their respective fields of expertise. Passion and confident individuality – concepts not dissimilar to Zachary Levi’s definition of a Nerd: “One whose unbridled passion for something, or things, defines who they are as a person, without fear of other people’s judgement.”
 

Relatable and Heartwarming

Until recently, I have genuinely struggled to be comfortable and open with my nerdom. The Librarians presents an honest portrayal of the quest for self-acceptance, and the battle against insecurity. Definitely a journey that rings true to my own heart. This theme of internal growth has a consistent and natural progression throughout the course of the series. True to the ever-changing nature of life, the characters are constantly evolving. Before joining the library, our core characters kept their talents hidden, leading solitary adventure-free lives devoid of the warmth of human connection. I am reminded of something Jennifer Morrison said last July at Nerd HQ 2016:
 

“The world likes to delineate what it means to be strong from being vulnerable, saying that strength means being able to take care of and defend yourself, to think for yourself, and be smart, bright, creative, and in control of your destiny. It’s important to know that it all goes together. It takes incredible strength to be vulnerable. You need a community and you need love. Those things are crucial.”

 
This message hits straight to the heart of what makes the chemistry between the characters so genuinely relatable. All human beings need love, friendship, and support to thrive. The community that they find at the Library opens up a world of deeper meaning and connection. Although the group has its conflicts and arguments like any family, their companionship and teamwork provides the stability and encouragement necessary to nurture amazing growth and acceptance. Thus empowered, they embrace their individual greatness and blossom into who they’ve always been destined to become – the best versions of themselves. It is by no means a quick or easy process, but the deep trust they share allows them to pull together and overcome seemingly impossible problems. It is a truly touching example of the power that comes from friends who are family…something that many of us nerds out there seek to build for ourselves.
 

Thoroughly Uplifting and Inspiring

The Librarians has something for everyone, bursting at the seams with a veritable wealth of nerd cultures. Never predictable or stale, it constantly reinvents itself in exciting and unpredictable ways. When all is said and done, we love The Librarians because it isn’t just about the swashbuckling pursuit and protection of all things magical. It is about embracing your own special brand of nerdom, celebrating the strength of individuality while acknowledging the incredibly important fact that we are stronger together. When nerds join together united, no matter what we may face, there is always hope. There is always a way. In a world that isn’t always so magical, this powerful message inspires an uplifting spirit of magical possibility.
