The still-untitled Han Solo film is apparently coming along at hyper-drive speeds. After recently announcing the beginning of production for the film, a myriad of information has been released concerning the beloved Star Wars character’s movie. Principal photography began February 20th at Pinewood Studios in London, and Walt Disney Studios recently released a cast photo featuring directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller at the controls of the Millenium Falcon, and of course, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Alden Ehrenreich, and even Chewbacca…or, rather, Joonas Suotamo. Suotamo, who stands at nearly 7’ tall, was involved in The Force Awakens as a Chewbacca double, so this isn’t his first rodeo involved with playing the Wookiee. Woody Harrelson’s character, according to IMDb, finally has a name as well –Garris Shrike. This Corellian character first appeared in the novel The Paradise Snare (The Han Solo trilogy #1, by A.C. Crispin) where he taught Han Solo how to fly and thus began young Solo’s life as a smuggler. This novel was set around 10 years before A New Hope, so it’s possible that the movie will be, roughly, in that time frame as well. Joining the cast are Thandie Newton (Westworld) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), though their roles are still unannounced – as well as Emilia Clarke’s role. Lawrence Kasdan (The Force Awakens, Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back) is writing the screenplay with his son Jon.
Directors Lord and Miller stated that “Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous. We can’t think of anything funny to say, because we just feel really moved, and really lucky.”
Though an official synopsis has yet to be announced, the studio announced that the movie will “explore the duo’s adventures before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, including their early encounters with that other card-playing rogue from a galaxy far, far, away, Lando Calrissian”. Of course, the movie is slated for release on May 25, 2018.
