Let’s raise our red solo cups in celebration: the Han Solo standalone film began production on January 30th. With Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) as directors, the movie’s sure to be full of Solo-esque snarkiness. The Lucasfilm movie is set to explore Han Solo’s younger life before he got caught up in the Rebellion with the Skywalkers. Chris Miller announced the production of the film on Twitter, with the pun “Han First Shot”, obviously alluding to the Han-and-Greedo-who-shot-first disagreement from A New Hope.

The decision to expand the Star Wars franchise by announcing plans for a Han Solo film in 2015 was met with criticism. Some view the plans as Disney’s attempt at “milking” the franchise for all it’s worth, with no regard to the various books and comics written prior to Disney’s taking over of the franchise (remember, those materials were then deemed non-canon). Others are excited for the news and the ability to delve further into the Star Wars universe…who wouldn’t want to watch Han Solo become the “scruffy-looking nerfherder” we met in Episode 4? No matter how you slice it, though, we’re getting two movies in less than 6 months: Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released in December 2017, and the untitled Han Solo film will be releasing on May 25th, 2018.
The film is still developing their cast list, but it has already announced a handful of actors who will be in the movie. Alden Ehrenreich (Ben Collins from a 2005 episode of Supernatural) will play the young Han Solo, Donald Glover (Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Martian) is Lando Calrissian, and Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games, 2012) has been cast, allegedly, as Solo’s mentor. Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones) is also on that list, but information on the character she’s playing has yet to be released. Additionally, the plot of the movie is still unknown. The title of the movie has yet to be announced as well, but for now, the pun-laced working title is Star Wars: Red Cup.
Is anyone else excited for the movie?
