Official Black Panther Synopsis Revealed

By Michaela Bush

The middle-of-the-week slump was relieved somewhat when an abundance of information was released concerning Marvel Studios’ upcoming Black Panther movie in today’s press release.  Most exciting of which?  The synopsis and the announcement that production has begun!  According to the Marvel press release, the synopsis is as follows:

Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the events of Captain America: Civil War, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King.  However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.”

The press release also announced that Martin Freeman will be reprising his role as Everett K. Ross, with Andy Serkis returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.  Michael B. Jordan was also announced to be taking up the role of Killmonger.  Of course, this is the supervillain that T’Challa will eventually meet—or have a rematch with, as the synopsis hints.  Other familiar faces will be appearing: naturally, Chadwick Boseman will be reprising his role as the Black Panther / T’Challa.  Florence Kasumba will be taking on the role of a character named Ayo –after previously playing a security chief in Captain America: Civil War.   Forest Whitaker will be in the movie as well, following his role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as Saw Gerrera.  In this role, however, he will be Zuri.  Additionally, Lupita Nyong’o from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will be Nakia.  In the comics, Nakia is an accomplice to Killmonger and picks up the alias of “Malice”.

When we last saw T’Challa, he was conferencing with Captain America in an after-credits scene in Captain America: Civil War.  However whether or not Chris Evans or Sebastian Stan will be appearing in Black Panther has yet to be released.

The movie will be directed by Ryan Coogler, who has directed two other movies: Creed and Fruitvale Station.  He’s also worked with screenwriting for all three movies, including Black Panther, of course.  Other credits include a few shorts that he has written and directed.  It is an interesting move by Marvel to include such a new director—and talk about fantastic for the resume! – but high expectations will also be present.  It’s exciting to see a fresh face join the ranks of the well-known Marvel directors Jon Favreau, Kevin Feige, Kenneth Branagh, and the like.

The movie is slated for release for February 16, 2018 – a smidgen over a year from now.  What or who are you most excited to see in this movie?
