In the Holy Trinity of Star Wars, you have George Lucas: visionary, John Williams: maestro, and Ralph McQuarrie: artiste. Like the renaissance masters before them, these men sculpted science fiction in their image transporting us not only to different worlds, but to a whole new galaxy far, far away. Today, with the release of Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie, we have the opportunity to celebrate one of these masters. This two volume set, features beautiful art from McQuarrie’s creative genius from his first rough sketches to gorgeous matte finishes that visually brought to life the Star Wars Universe. As a lover of all things Star Wars, this book is a must own. It is amazing to see what pieces were pulled directly into the films, others that evolved as the creative process and story evolved, and still others that were cut from the original trilogy entirely only to be used later in the prequels or in the cartoons. Below are my personal 5 favorite pieces from each volume.
VOLUME ONE: Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back
- “Fantastic Five,” April 1st, 1975
- “Big Gun,” July 13, 1978
- Flying Beast at Cloud City
- Supertrooper
- “Sword Fight on Antenna,” August 21-22, 1978
VOLUME TWO: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
- Imperial Walker & Snowspeeder
- Confrontation with Probot
- Concept Sketch: Scooter
- Emperor’s Throne
- Production Illustration: Sicemon
