Dragon Con may be known for its panels, parties, and record-breaking crowds every year (this year’s 30th anniversary surpassed 77,000 attendees!), but it is also famous for its cosplayers. There isn’t a way to walk around without bumping into someone with an amazing cosplay they’ve clearly spent lots of time and money creating, especially on Saturday, when a parade is thrown to show off their accomplishments. One thing that also stands out among cosplayers is the diversity of those who participate and the community it creates. Cosplay connects fans from all walks of life and allows them to express what they are passionate about in a welcoming space. It is a cornerstone of fandom and Dragon Con is the perfect place to celebrate that which makes us nerds.
Here are just a few of the cosplays from Dragon Con 2016.
Han Solo, Kylo Ren, and Rey

Agent Carter
Emily, 21
What does being a nerd mean to you? Loving something with everything you are.
Nightwing
Arsenio, 25
What was the hardest part about putting your cosplay together? The time frame. I put it together in a month!
Psylocke and Wolverine

What does being a nerd mean to you? Doing what you want and not apologizing for it. A lot of times people look at you like you’re crazy for being a nerd and cosplaying, but there are crazier things someone can do.
Dr. Facilier
A.C., 28
What is your favorite part about cosplay? The attention I get!
The Comedian
Aaron, 33
What is your favorite part about cosplay? I love the creative aspect. San Diego Comic-Con has become very industry-oriented, but Dragon Con is still fan-based, which allows for more self-expression. It’s beautiful.
Daredevil and Elektra
Brian, 32 and Mandy, 30
What is your favorite part about cosplay? Getting to take pictures – Brian
What does being a nerd mean to you? – Being yourself – Mandy
Poison Ivy
Farrah, 19
What is your favorite part about cosplay? Seeing little kids you can make happy with the character you’ve dressed up as.
Lady Olenna Tyrell and Brienne of Tarth
Beverly, 86 and Meryl, 62
What was the hardest part about putting this cosplay together? We chose my mom’s costume carefully because we knew it had to be something that fit. She doesn’t actually watch Game of Thrones because it’s a little risqué, but we showed her clips of Olenna and she fell in love and we knew this would be the part for her. – Meryl
What does being a nerd mean to you? Being a nerd is having fun in a different way and out of step from the crowd. – Beverly
