John Boyega is Reuniting with Attack the Block Director Joe Cornish

Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor John Boyega dropped a bombshell on Twitter the other day, revealing that he has met with Attack the Block director Joe Cornish and they are “brainstorming” together. This news comes fresh off the announcements that Boyega will be starring in Pacific Rim: Maelstrom and Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit riots film. He recently won the BAFTA “Rising Star Award” and the Empire award for “Best Male Newcomer.” Merely six months after starring in the highest-grossing film of all time, Boyega is already on track to becoming a household name.

I remember seeing Attack the Block during San Diego Comic-Con in 2011 at a fan screening that was followed by a discussion with Joe Cornish, Edgar Wright and Boyega. The film was unlike anything I’ve seen before – quippy, entertaining, wicked smart and fast-paced. The script was tightly written, expertly shot and creatively constructed. One of my favorite aspects of the film was Cornish’s decision to use practical effects for the monsters, rather than going the CGI route; these monsters (or “bear creatures,” as the characters call them) both looked and sounded terrifying.

A sequel to Attack the Block was rumored a while back, and if there’s any indication that will be a reality, here it is. While it seems unlikely that a sequel would work due to the incidents and casualties of the original, I would welcome Boyega’s Moses back with open arms. If it’s not a sequel, I would love to see the original cast reunite, including the likes of Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker, Franz Drameh, Alex Esmail and more. In addition to directing this, Cornish and Edgar Wright co-wrote Ant-Man and The Adventures of Tintin together. Attack the Block is one of my favorites, and the idea of these folks teaming up for another adventure is a superlative one. Sign me up!
